India’s commitment to women and child-centric development was prominently featured at the 63rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Urooj Manzoor, representing RSKS India, underscored the importance of national progress reliant on the dignity, security, opportunities, and essential services available to women and children.

During her address under Agenda Item 3, Manzoor highlighted the extensive network of Anganwadi Centres in India. There are currently over 14 lakh Anganwadi Centres providing crucial nutrition, health, and early childhood services to more than 7.5 crore children, 1.10 crore pregnant and lactating women, as well as nearly 16 lakh adolescent girls.

The government’s development initiatives also include the Poshan Tracker, which enables digital monitoring of Anganwadi services and their beneficiaries, ensuring more effective delivery of needed support.

Highlighting Maternal Support and Economic Participation

Manzoor elaborated on India’s maternal support schemes, particularly the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, which, as of July 31, 2026, had disbursed ₹20,571 crore to 4.37 crore beneficiaries. This programme offers maternity benefits through direct financial transfers to eligible women, enhancing their economic stability.

The intervention also detailed the broader support mechanisms under Mission Shakti, which include One Stop Centres, Women Helplines, Shakti Sadan, Sakhi Niwas, and Palna. Statistics reveal that approximately 1.11 crore women received assistance from One Stop Centres and Women Helplines by January 2026, showcasing the government’s focus on safeguarding women.

Moreover, women’s economic participation was discussed as a critical aspect of broader developmental strategies. The expansion of Self-Help Groups and support for women-led entrepreneurship were outlined as essential pathways to boost financial inclusion and economic empowerment.

Calls for Action and International Cooperation

During her statement, Manzoor asserted that true national development is guided by women and children, emphasising the need for concurrent advancements in nutrition, safety, financial inclusion, and economic potential. Her speech called for increased collaboration among governments, civil societies, development partners, and international organisations to foster actionable outcomes for women and children.

She underscored the imperative to invest in women and protect children, insisting on the necessity of strengthening inclusive institutions to ensure equitable development. The comprehensive approach presented highlights India’s commitment to creating a cohesive framework addressing social protection, nutrition, digital governance, economic inclusion, and child welfare.

Manzoor’s address to the Council encapsulated India’s systematic approach towards improving the livelihood and well-being of women and children. By aligning social initiatives within a broader development framework, the country aims to lay down a solid foundation for a more equitable society.
