The Indian government’s response to the accommodation challenges faced by athletes during the Asian Games in Nagoya involves mobilising around 2,000 expatriates residing in the region. These individuals have been requested to be ready to offer temporary lodging should Indian athletes encounter difficulties in finding suitable accommodations. This initiative comes as a proactive measure amid reports of inefficiencies in the arrangement of hotel rooms for the participating teams.

The situation escalated shortly after the Indian contingent’s arrival in Japan, with several athletes left without accommodation for extended periods. Reports indicate that some athletes experienced wait times of up to 12 hours before they could secure a room. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has initiated this contingency plan as a response to the ongoing issues, aiming to ensure that the athletes have appropriate living conditions during the event.

The assistance from the Indian community aims to alleviate the strain caused by the accommodation shortfall, which has reportedly affected not only Indian athletes but many participants from different countries as well. The organiser’s challenges in providing sufficient housing for the large number of athletes and officials at this major sporting event have highlighted the logistical complexities involved.

Accommodation Shortages Affecting Indian Contingent

The accommodation crisis became evident as members of the Indian delegation began arriving in Nagoya. India’s Chef de Mission, Sahdev Yadav, revealed on September 15, 2026, that he learned upon arrival that approximately 30 to 35 Indian athletes had been removed from the list of confirmed accommodations. According to Yadav, he was assured that the Indian contingent had complied with the official numbers stated in their reservation. However, the organising committee had communicated that an unexpected influx of athletes from India had occurred.

In an effort to resolve the situation, Yadav reported that India had initially booked additional hotel rooms to accommodate those displaced athletes. Plans were made to secure 18 extra rooms, and ultimately, a total of 10 more were anticipated to house approximately 30 athletes from disciplines such as badminton and shooting.

The Indian support team also arranged transport logistics for athletes arriving at the airport, with deputy chefs de mission Alaknanda Ashok and Anjali Bhagwat personally overseeing the welcoming and transportation of athletes to their respective accommodations. Yadav assured that with these efforts, all athletes have since found lodging, indicating that the crisis is being managed effectively.

Community Support Enhances Contingency Measures

With the possibility of continued accommodation issues arising as more team members are expected to arrive, the Indian community’s inclusion in the contingency measures has been strategically beneficial. This additional support network could provide immediate and alternate accommodation solutions if the official arrangements fall short of demand.

While acknowledging the mismanagement that has characterised the accommodation situation, Yadav emphasised that the priority remains on ensuring that it does not hinder athletes’ preparations for their events. Despite operational setbacks, he stressed the importance of a coordinated response to support the athletes fully.

As the Indian contingent prepares for the ongoing Asian Games, the engagement of the local Indian community as a supportive resource exemplifies a collaborative approach to overcoming logistical challenges. The proactive measures taken are aimed at maintaining a conducive environment for the athletes as they compete in this prestigious event.
