Six Used Car Models Lead Sales in India’s Resale Market

The CSR Journal Magazine

Six specific models dominate the used car market in India, accounting for nearly twenty per cent of sales on a major organised resale platform. The Maruti Suzuki Swift, Wagon R 1.0, Honda City, Hyundai i10, Grand i10, and Swift Dzire collectively represent 20.3% of total sales by volume. Notably, the Maruti Suzuki Swift alone claims a 4.8% market share, which is the largest for any individual model.

India’s used car market has consistently outpaced the new car segment in growth over recent years, with CRISIL Ratings projecting an increase of 8% to 10% in the current fiscal year, translating to approximately 6 million units sold. This growth rate significantly exceeds that of new cars, underscoring a trend where urban consumers seek reliable vehicles without straining their budgets.

The longevity of the top-selling models highlights consumer preferences that extend beyond their initial purchase. Data from Cars24 up to July 2026 indicated that Maruti Suzuki holds about one-third of the market share at 33%, with Hyundai following at 22%, leaving the remainder to other manufacturers.

Key Characteristics of Popular Models

The Maruti Suzuki Swift not only tops sales charts but epitomises longevity in the market, having been a favourite among consumers for the last two decades. Its distinctive appeal lies particularly with younger buyers, many of whom have grown accustomed to seeing the Swift on roads across India.

Another notable model, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0, holds a 3.4% share due to its practical tall-boy design and economical running costs. This model effectively meets the needs of buyers looking for space and reliability without incurring excessive fuel expenses, thereby outpacing more glamorous options in the used car segment.

The Honda City, also sharing a 3.4% sales figure, stands as the leading sedan in the used car category, appealing to those seeking more interior space while still affordable. This model attracts buyers upgrading from hatchbacks who desire additional room without incurring the higher costs associated with SUVs.

Hyundai features prominently with two models, the i10 and Grand i10. The Hyundai i10, with a 3.3% share, continues to attract buyers despite no longer being sold new. Its compact size, low maintenance requirements, and suitability for urban environments drive its enduring popularity. Meanwhile, the Grand i10 captures 2.7% of sales due to its modern features and slightly larger cabin, appealing to those wanting a stepping stone from older vehicles without transitioning to a wholly new model.

Insights into Consumer Trends

The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, also at 2.7%, serves as a compact sedan that retains the Swift’s reputation for dependability while offering added practicality. This model appeals to those desiring sedan features without excessive prices.

When analysing these six particular models, trends become evident. Five of them belong to the hatchback or compact sedan categories, and all are prioritised for their economical operation rather than high-end features. This emphasises what consumers in India’s used car market value: affordability and reliability over the latest offerings.

This long-term consumer behaviour signals that preferences in the used car sector are likely to remain stable, with buyers favouring established models that demonstrate low ownership costs over time. As such, prospective car buyers in India are more inclined to select vehicles with a proven track record in real-world usage rather than the latest market releases.
