The summit is significant as it coincides with stalled negotiations mediated by the United States concerning the resolution of Russia’s ongoing invasion, which began a year and a half ago.

Key issues such as territorial disputes in eastern Ukraine remain barriers to progress, and Ukraine is actively pursuing security assurances from participating countries to safeguard any potential agreements. During the meeting, Zelenskyy characterised the gathering as a “significant beginning” aimed at fostering deeper relationships between the countries involved, adding that the summit would serve as a new cooperative element within the European Union framework.

Impacts of Russian Strikes on Ukraine

Throughout the night leading up to the summit, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported devastating consequences as a result of Russian strikes, particularly in the Zhytomyr region, located to the west of Kyiv. The attacks led to the deaths of two individuals and injured two others, while also causing fires in warehouse and production facilities. Emergency responders faced challenges due to ongoing air raid alerts and were compelled to regroup amidst escalating threats from explosive devices in the vicinity.

Further strikes occurred in Zaporizhzhia, where a drone attack resulted in the destruction of a shopping complex, injuring one person and igniting a fire. The continued assaults reveal a persistent threat as both military and civilian infrastructures in Ukraine remain targets for Russian firepower.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed that its air defences successfully intercepted a substantial number of Ukrainian drones, reportedly destroying 629 of them across 14 Russian regions, including Crimea and the Black Sea. Moscow officials noted that over 350 drones were detected approaching the capital, with many being neutralised before they could reach Moscow.

Regional Tensions and Military Actions Reported

In the southern Rostov region near the Ukrainian border, local authorities reported damage to houses and residential structures from a recent attack, although no casualties were recorded, according to Rostov Governor Yuri Slyusar. These strikes are part of a broader pattern of military aggression from Russia, which has consistently targeted Ukrainian assets in recent months.

Furthermore, the Russian military stated that it conducted drone strikes overnight focusing on Ukrainian ports and logistics facilities, specifically targeting a bulk carrier in the port of Chornomorsk. The ministry alleged that a logistics centre operated by Nova Poshta, located six kilometres northwest of Odesa, was hit as it purportedly served as a military supply depot.

These actions reflect a determined effort by Russian forces to undermine Ukraine’s logistical capabilities in their ongoing conflict.
