Manu Bhaker and Tajinderpal Singh Toor have been designated as India’s flagbearers for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. This announcement was made on September 18 by the Indian Olympic contingent, which confirmed the news via its official handle on X. It marked a significant moment for both athletes as they prepare to represent their country in front of a global audience.

Bhaker’s Historic Achievements

Manu Bhaker, a double Olympic medalist, made headlines as she won two bronze medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She will compete in several shooting events, including the women’s 10m air pistol and the 25m pistol, as well as in the Mixed Team event. Her achievement at the Paris Olympics has established her as the first athlete from independent India to claim two medals in a single Olympic edition, illustrating her prominence in the sport.

On her selection as flagbearer, India’s chef de mission Sahdev Yadav expressed confidence in her abilities to inspire fellow athletes. Bhaker’s experience and prowess in shooting events position her as a key asset for India’s overall performance at the upcoming games.

Toor’s Bid For A Third Gold

Tajinderpal Singh Toor aims to secure his third consecutive gold medal in the men’s shot put at the Asian Games. Following his gold medal performances at the 2018 Jakarta Games and the 2023 Hangzhou event, where he achieved a throw of 20.36 metres, Toor is focused on extending his success. His determination is expected to play a significant role in India’s athletics prospects at the games.

The Athletics Federation of India corroborated Toor’s selection as the second flagbearer, highlighting the importance of his contributions to Indian athletics. The competition promises to be tough, with several contenders also vying for medals in track and field events, making Toor’s participation highly anticipated.

What To Expect At The Games

The 20th Asian Games will take place from September 19 to October 4, featuring over 500 Indian athletes competing in 37 different sports. The event is expected to attract participation from athletes representing 45 nations across 43 sports and 469 medal events. Historically, Japan has hosted the Asian Games on two previous occasions, first in Tokyo in 1958 and then in Hiroshima in 1994.

India’s performance in the previous edition of the Asian Games in Hangzhou saw the country finish fourth in the medal standings, accumulating a total of 107 medals, including 28 gold. The nation aims to uphold this achievement as it enters the upcoming games. Notable athletes, including PV Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu, will take part, while India’s boxing team arrives after a successful Commonwealth Games outing, having secured 10 medals.

In athletics, over 70 competitors are expected to partake, with significant names such as Gurveer Singh and Tejaswin Shankar continuing to be in focus. India will be defending its titles in cricket and kabaddi, with robust teams formed for both men’s and women’s tournaments. The men’s cricket team will be led by Shreyas Iyer, while Harmanpreet Kaur heads the women’s squad.

Additionally, the hockey tournaments for both men and women hold substantial importance as they serve as qualification rounds for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Winning teams will secure direct qualification, adding an extra layer of competitiveness to the games.
