The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recently reported that approximately 82,44,903 passengers utilised its services on September 17, marking the highest single-day footfall in its history. The announcement was made on social media platform X, highlighting this landmark achievement for the metro system.

In response to the record-breaking figures, Santosh Chalke, Deputy Inspector General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at DMRC, noted that this achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of both organisations in enhancing security and ensuring smooth transit for commuters throughout the National Capital Region. He emphasised the vital role personnel play in maintaining high security standards while improving the overall travelling experience for users.

Impact of Ongoing DTC Strike on Commuter Traffic

This record comes amid an ongoing strike by private agency drivers of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), now in its fourth day. The drivers are advocating for wage increases and improved medical and social security benefits. This action has left numerous buses off the roads, resulting in increased reliance on the metro system for daily commuters.

Drivers from several depots, including Rani Khera, Rajghat, Nehru Place, Burari, Wazirpur, Ghumanhera, and Sarita Vihar, have participated in the protest, further contributing to the heightened demand for metro services during this period. The DTC strike has significantly influenced passenger choices, leading to a surge in metro usage.

On September 16, the DMRC had anticipated the rise in passenger numbers due to the strike and proactively implemented measures to manage the expected increase. The corporation introduced an additional 20 train trips across its operational network to accommodate the surge effectively, focusing on peak times to ensure minimal disruption to commuter travel.

Operational Adjustments and Future Commitments

The DMRC has reportedly deployed eight extra trains in alignment with operational needs, aiming to provide smoother and more efficient transit for its passengers. These precautions are particularly vital as the metro system adapts to fluctuating passenger volumes amid external disruptions, such as the DTC strike.

Continuing with these enhanced services, the DMRC assured commuters that additional trains will be operational from 08:00 to 20:00 hours on September 17, 2026, and the various arrangements will remain in effect until the situation stabilises. Passengers have been encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly during this period of heightened demand.

Established on May 3, 1995, the DMRC operates as a joint venture between the Union Government and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It manages a vast network of approximately 416 kilometres, comprising 303 stations, including critical connections like the Noida to Greater Noida Corridor and Gurugram’s Rapid Metro Line. Beyond its operations in Delhi, the DMRC is involved in the management and maintenance of metro systems in other cities, encompassing the Mumbai Metro Line 3, Chennai Metro Phase 2, and the Patna Metro, highlighting its expanding influence across the nation.
