Westland Books has proudly launched a new biography titled Eternal Light: The Life and Legacy of the 14th Dalai Lama, which details the life journey of His Holiness. The book, authored by respected journalist Dr Arvind Yadav, was unveiled at a formal gathering at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi.

The event celebrated the significant life and enduring impact of the Dalai Lama, chronicling his transition from childhood in Tibet to his status as a prominent global spiritual figure advocating for compassion, peace, and non-violence. The occasion kicked off with a Long-Life Prayer, led by Geshe Chopa Tenzin Lhadron, and featured reflections from Padma Shri Prof. Ngawang Samten, Pavan K. Varma, who served as the Guest of Honour, and the author, Dr Arvind Yadav. The book’s release coincided with a presidential address by renowned philosopher Dr Karan Singh.

Tracing a Journey of Resilience and Compassion

The biography narrates the early years of Lhamo Thondup, born in a remote Tibetan village in 1935, who was identified as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two. His life has been marked by trials that he faced with resilience and profound wisdom. At just sixteen, he took on the full political responsibility of Tibet during a turbulent period, following China’s invasion in 1950.

By the age of twenty-four, the Dalai Lama had sought asylum in India following a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. He resettled in Dharamshala, establishing the Tibetan government-in-exile and revitalising the Tibetan community while dedicating himself to the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism’s rich spiritual, cultural, and philosophical heritage.

Beyond his efforts for Tibet, the Dalai Lama gained international recognition for his advocacy of peace and dialogue. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, he has continuously promoted messages of compassion and non-violence, inspiring individuals across various cultures, religions, and regions. He has effectively brought to light the struggles faced by Tibet and its people, integrating their plight into global consciousness.

A Biographical Insight into a Global Icon

In Eternal Light, Dr Arvind Yadav meticulously chronicles the life of the 14th Dalai Lama, aiming to clarify events that may have been misrepresented or inadequately documented. The biography holds the endorsement of His Holiness himself, reinforcing its credibility and significance as a work that encapsulates hope, humility, and the resilience of the human spirit.

Addressing attendees at the launch, Dr Arvind Yadav remarked on the importance of the Dalai Lama’s life, framing it as more than a personal narrative but as a universal tale of compassion and humanity. He emphasised that the Dalai Lama symbolises a force for good in the world, demonstrating that maintaining one’s identity often requires less confrontation and more inner strength.

During the presidential address, Dr Karan Singh stated the importance of compassion in the present world. He articulated that the Dalai Lama’s message serves as a reminder to empathise with the pain and suffering of others, advocating for a revival of compassion both individually and collectively across society.
