The day started in a Florida based school was usual and seemed ordinary day, before a 13-year-old student’s online chat with AI took a shocking turn.
What is the incident?
As per a report, the 13-year-old logged onto a school device and started typing a suspicious message that read, “How to kill my friend in the middle of class.”
What did AI do?
In no time a program named Gaggle that is AI-powered, flagged the message and alerted authorities. And a school authority confronted the student at Southwestern Middle School in Deland, a city located about an hour north of Orlando.
What did the teenager say?
He said police that he was “just trolling” his friend. But this wasn’t liked by neither school, nor the local law enforcement, none of them saw humor in the statement; especially after the maximum cases of school tragedies that has grown exponentially over the years. This includes 2018 Parkland shooting in Florida that claimed 17 lives.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed of the arrest and detention of the child in a juvenile detention facility.
A video is circulating on social media showing the lad being escorted from a police vehicle.
AI surveillance in classrooms
After this incident, debate has started on the use of surveillance technology in schools.
The monitoring system that detected the incident, Gaggle, has been designed to track behavior of students that are alarming and alert authorities in real time.
While in this case the tool detected perfectly, it has been controversial for false alarms and people have accused the tool of policing students’ private thoughts.
Post this incident, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has requested parents to discuss with children about responsible online behavior. “Parents, please talk to your kids so they don’t make the same mistake.”
