The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has alleged that the coalition government led by Chandrababu Naidu has an “anti-poor agenda” in Amaravati, as revealed in Parliament. The party’s concerns were highlighted following replies from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to queries posed by YSRCP MPs. The responses indicated that the Andhra Pradesh Government did not submit any proposals for housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urbaan 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) for impoverished families in the Amaravati Capital Region.

According to the Ministry’s disclosures, Andhra Pradesh has received approval for 61,084 houses under PMAY-U 2.0, with a Central funding of Rs 882.32 crore. In a recent meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee held on June 17, 2026, additional approvals for 12,370 houses were allocated, covering 107 urban local bodies throughout the state, with a financial backing of Rs 185.55 crore. However, the YSRCP alleged that Amaravati was intentionally excluded from these proposals.

Concerns Raised About Housing Denial in Capital

The YSRCP expressed concerns regarding the implications of the lack of housing proposals for Amaravati, questioning the intentions behind the city’s development. They pointed out the inconsistencies in the submissions made for other towns and cities while Amaravati was allegedly neglected. The party raised pertinent questions regarding whether the capital city was envisioned solely for the affluent and real estate developers, leaving no place for the working class and lower-income families.

The coalition government previously claimed that Amaravati would be inclusive and accessible to all. However, the YSRCP contended that the actions taken by the government contradict this assertion. By failing to secure PMAY housing for the economically weaker sections, the government has allegedly indicated that its vision of Amaravati does not accommodate the needs of low-income families or daily wage earners.

This situation raises concerns about the government’s priorities, as highlighted by the YSRCP. The parliamentary replies purportedly expose what the party terms the “double standards” of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government. While substantial funds are reportedly being allocated to promote Amaravati as a world-class capital, there is a lack of provisions for the poorest families in the same region.

Call for Accountability from the Government

The YSRCP has urged the state government, led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Minister Nara Lokesh, to address the issue by answering why no PMAY-U 2.0 housing proposals were made for the poor in Amaravati. The party asserted that the central government’s response offers a clear view of the situation. It claimed that excluding low-income families from Amaravati is not coincidental but rather a deliberate policy of the coalition government.

YSRCP’s allegations highlight the pressing need for transparent policies that address the housing crisis among the poorer sectors of society. The party emphasised that a government committed to inclusive development would ensure that the initial benefits of housing initiatives reach the economically disadvantaged demographics in the capital.

The ongoing political discourse regarding housing policy in Amaravati underscores broader issues related to urban development, equity, and the role of government in addressing the needs of all citizens. The YSR Congress Party continues to advocate for a fair approach to housing that includes these vulnerable groups in any future planning and implementation initiatives.
