WhatsApp to Implement Mandatory SIM Binding for Indian Users Starting March 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government is set to enforce a new regulation requiring WhatsApp users to link their accounts to their mobile SIM cards. Effective March 1, 2026, this mandate will be implemented by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Telecom Cyber Security (TCS) Rules, 2024. Users will need to ensure their WhatsApp account remains connected to the physical SIM card in their primary device. Officials have stated that the deadline will not be extended past February 28, 2026, emphasizing the measure’s importance for national security and tackling rising incidents of cyber fraud.

What is SIM Binding?

Globally, WhatsApp has operated under a model termed “verify-once,” where users enter their phone number, receive a one-time password (OTP), and gain access to their account. Previously, users could remove or replace their SIM card without affecting their ability to use WhatsApp on various devices. The upcoming SIM binding requirement will transform this model significantly for users in India. Under the new rules, WhatsApp will routinely verify every six hours whether the registered SIM card is present in the primary device. If the SIM card is removed or changed, access to WhatsApp will cease until re-verification is completed with the original SIM.

Reasons for the New Regulation

The introduction of SIM binding has been linked to a notable increase in sophisticated scams targeting users in India. The government has indicated that scammers often authenticate a single Indian mobile number and operate the WhatsApp account from remote locations, complicating enforcement and identification efforts. By implementing mandatory SIM binding, officials aim to ensure that every active WhatsApp account is linked to a KYC-verified SIM that must be physically present in the device. This initiative is intended to enhance traceability, reduce anonymity for fraudsters, and curb financial losses tied to cybercrime, which exceeded Rs 22,800 crore in 2024.

WhatsApp’s Preparations for SIM Binding

WhatsApp has reportedly begun notifying some Indian users about the new regulatory requirements. Notifications include messages indicating that the application needs to verify the presence of the SIM card in the device due to compliance with local regulations. Continuous verification processes are already being tested in beta versions of the Android app.

Implications of the Changes Starting March 1

With the implementation of SIM binding on March 1, 2026, users can expect several key changes in their WhatsApp experience. Firstly, the continuous verification process will mean that WhatsApp will check for the SIM card every six hours, significantly limiting the flexibility of remote access in the app. Secondly, sessions on WhatsApp Web or desktop will terminate every six hours, necessitating re-authentication through the primary phone equipped with the active SIM. Furthermore, features like “Linked Devices,” allowing access on multiple devices without needing the primary phone, will also face stricter regulations. Users relying on Wi-Fi-only devices may find this particularly limiting, necessitating frequent logins using their primary device.

Preparing for the Upcoming Changes

As the deadline approaches, users are encouraged to take specific steps to ensure a smooth transition to the SIM binding requirement. It is advisable to confirm that their WhatsApp account is linked to the SIM card currently inserted in their primary phone. Any recent changes in SIM cards should be verified to match the registration. Additionally, users should update the application to the latest version available and keep their primary device accessible, especially if they frequently use WhatsApp Web or desktop. This will facilitate the necessary re-authentication process during sessions.
