The German player’s performance lasted a little over two hours, showcasing his ability to excel under pressure. Zverev’s strong start set the tone, and he maintained this momentum, particularly in the pivotal moments of the second set.

Despite facing a challenge from van de Zandschulp, Zverev demonstrated remarkable composure. The Dutchman created his first break point at 3-2 in the second set but was unable to capitalise, losing a lengthy rally that highlighted Zverev’s defensive skills.

In a critical moment during the second set, van de Zandschulp gained a set point on Zverev’s serve while leading 5-4. However, an error on a forehand from the Dutchman allowed Zverev to regain control. He seized the opportunity, breaking serve and ultimately winning the set 7-5.

The third set saw Zverev continue to dominate as he swiftly moved to a 6-1 conclusion, completing a straight-sets win and marking his entry into the 13th Grand Slam semifinal of his career.

This season, Zverev has achieved notable success with 51 match wins on the ATP Tour, which is the highest on tour. He has also amassed 23 Grand Slam match victories this year, surpassing the previous record of 22 held by Boris Becker since 1989.

Zverev’s Upcoming Challenge and Historical Context

Looking ahead, Zverev is set to face Karen Khachanov in the semifinals. He holds a favourable head-to-head record against Khachanov, leading 6-3. Their last significant encounter occurred during the gold-medal match at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where Zverev emerged victorious.

The 29-year-old aims to make further history in New York, having previously reached the US Open final in 2020. In that match, he narrowly missed his first major title, losing to Dominic Thiem after being two points away from victory.

Van de Zandschulp’s journey in the tournament concluded in the quarterfinals. This marked his second appearance at this stage in Flushing Meadows, with his first occurring in 2021 as a qualifier. He had an impressive run leading into the quarterfinal, including two back-to-back five-set victories, one of which featured a significant comeback from two sets down.

In the other semifinal matchup, American players Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton are set to face off. Shelton booked his place in the last four after defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, while Tiafoe secured his spot by overcoming Alex Michelsen. Both semifinals are scheduled for Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
