Wanted Punjab Gangster Amritpal Singh Held at Moldova Border

The CSR Journal Magazine

Amritpal Singh, also known as Amrit Dalam, has been apprehended at the Moldova border. He is a high-profile gangster associated with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang and is reportedly involved in making extortion calls directed at business operators in Punjab. This detention was confirmed by the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, on Saturday, citing an Interpol Red Notice that was requested by Punjab Police in collaboration with central agencies.

Ongoing Legal and Diplomatic Procedures

In his announcement, Yadav mentioned that Amritpal Singh is wanted for multiple serious criminal charges in Punjab and had been on the run for an extended period while abroad. The DGP noted that the successful detention was a result of sustained international coordination and diligent follow-up efforts by Punjab Police. Current legal and diplomatic procedures are underway to facilitate his extradition to India so that he can confront the judicial system.

Significant Milestone in Law Enforcement Efforts

Yadav characterized the detention of Amritpal Singh as a pivotal achievement in the continued efforts to identify and extradite criminals who are evading justice by operating from foreign territories. Amritpal Singh is recognized as a foreign-based gangster and holds a key connection to the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria crime syndicate. According to police accounts, he has actively conducted extortion operations targeting individuals and commercial establishments, especially in the Amritsar region.

Background and Criminal Allegations

Amritpal Singh originates from a village in Batala, located within the Gurdaspur district. He faces allegations in at least four significant criminal cases, including charges related to drug trafficking, homicide, and attempted homicide, all of which are documented in Gurdaspur. Furthermore, Punjab Police are currently tracking 61 other foreign-based gangsters who allegedly operate within Punjab through local collaborators. Amritpal Singh is among these apprehended criminals.

Establishment of Extradition Cell

To enhance the process of extradition, the Punjab Police have established an Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC). This initiative is aimed at expediting the return of fugitives who escape justice by leaving the country. Notably, two of Amritpal Singh’s associates were taken into custody by law enforcement in November, under suspicion of being assigned by him to execute targeted killings.
