The CSR Journal Magazine

Rupi Soren, the mother of Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, has died at the age of 80 in a private hospital. She passed away on Wednesday evening after a prolonged battle with health issues. Her condition had worsened since her admission to Hill View Hospital and Research Centre on September 18, where she was treated for breathing difficulties.

Dr Nitesh Priya, the hospital’s director, confirmed that she was in critical condition, experiencing multiple complications that necessitated ventilator support on the day of her death. The medical team had been closely monitoring her health throughout her stay in the hospital, but despite their efforts, she succumbed to her ailments around 8.30 pm.

Tributes and Condolences Pour In

The news of Rupi Soren’s demise has elicited widespread grief among political figures and the public alike. Hemant Soren had visited her in the hospital earlier on the day she passed away, highlighting the closeness within the family during this difficult time. BJP leader and former Chief Minister Champai Soren extended his condolences, sharing his sorrow on social media. He reflected on his connection with the Soren family and the significant moments during the Jharkhand movement that left a lasting impact on his life.

Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato also expressed his sorrow over her death, acknowledging her contributions to the state and her family’s legacy. Rupi Soren’s life has been intertwined with that of Jharkhand’s political landscape for decades, and her passing marks a notable event for many.

Rupi Soren was the wife of Shibu Soren, the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and a former Chief Minister. Her life was dedicated not only to her family but also to the political cause that has shaped Jharkhand’s history.

Political Legacy and Personal Contributions

Rupi Soren was known for her brief political career, having contested the 1999 Lok Sabha election from Dumka, which was then part of undivided Bihar. She narrowly lost the election to senior BJP leader Babulal Marandi by just under 5,000 votes. Following this, she chose to devote herself to caregiving for her husband, who passed away in August of the previous year.

This year, Rupi Soren had the honour of receiving the Padma Bhushan award on behalf of her late husband. The award was presented at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu made a special gesture by stepping down from the stage to personally present the award to her. Rupi Soren attended this significant event in a wheelchair, illustrating her enduring commitment to her husband’s legacy.

Rupi Soren also played a role in her son Hemant Soren’s political journey, having attended his swearing-in ceremony as Chief Minister. Her death signifies not just a personal loss for the Soren family, but also an end to an era marked by her familial and political contributions, intertwined with the broader narrative of Jharkhand’s political history.
