Workday Survey: 28% of Leaders Anticipate AI Job Cuts, But 40% Predict Higher Productivity

The CSR Journal Magazine

Workday has released a Global Workforce Report indicating that artificial intelligence is significantly influencing corporate perspectives on employment. Despite this technological shift, a majority of business leaders do not foresee extensive layoffs due to AI integration. The report highlights that 28 per cent of leaders predict a reduction in headcount, whereas 40 per cent believe AI will enhance the productivity of current employees. These findings emerged shortly after Workday’s announcement of plans to reduce its workforce by about 500 positions as part of a restructuring effort.

Phil Willburn, Vice President of People Systems, Intelligence & Support at Workday, noted that while many employees might not be changing roles, the nature of their existing jobs is evolving due to AI technologies. He emphasised the need for corporate leaders to communicate these changes transparently and to provide support for employees to adapt.

Transitioning Workforce Skills and Demands

The analysis of job postings from over 550 companies by Workday indicates a decrease in demand for basic AI skills. For instance, the need for simple prompting peaked in January 2026 but subsequently fell by 25 per cent. However, there is a growing appetite for advanced AI skills, including the development of AI tools and automated workflows, with demand rising by 51 per cent from September 2025 to July 2026. This transition reflects a shifting landscape where merely understanding how to operate an AI chatbot may no longer suffice for many roles.

Employees reported feeling inadequately prepared for these transitions. A survey of 6,000 full-time workers revealed that 79 per cent were aware of the skills necessary for success, yet only 66 per cent indicated their employers were actively assisting in skill development. Furthermore, 62 per cent of employees who rely heavily on AI in their daily tasks expressed concerns that their existing skills might lose value in the face of advancing technology.

Despite the apprehensions regarding skill relevance, 76 per cent of these AI-dependent workers remained optimistic that AI would generate new career opportunities. The contrast between expectations and actual support presents an ongoing challenge in the evolving employment landscape influenced by AI.

Internal Mobility and Job Market Competition

The report further highlights challenges employees face in advancing within their organisations. There has been a decrease in internal job movements, with 57 per cent of employers reporting a reduction compared to the prior year. Promotion rates have largely stagnated, with employees citing barriers such as hiring freezes, lack of managerial support, and concerns over biased selection processes. At the same time, competition for external positions has intensified.

Workday found that 84 per cent of job seekers utilised AI during their job search, resulting in an increase in the median number of applicants per job to 69, up from 58 a year earlier. Despite the heightened application numbers, the average duration to fill vacancies remained roughly 60 days. Companies reported that positions often stay unfilled due to candidates lacking requisite skills or misalignments in salary, location, and flexibility expectations.

Willburn stressed that evaluating candidates should extend beyond mere previous job experience; it also involves assessing their capability to quickly learn and address emerging challenges. The report depicts a complex scenario for employees, with voluntary turnover standing at about 16 per cent annually. Approximately 70 per cent of employees tend to remain with their organisations beyond two years, although enduring the same workplace does not necessarily equate to overall job satisfaction.
