Pramod Bhagat and Bhavina Patel to Lead India at Para Asian Games

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pramod Bhagat and Bhavina Patel have been designated as the flag bearers for India at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games. This prestigious honour is set to take place during the Opening Ceremony on October 18, 2026, in Nagoya, Japan. Both athletes are notable Paralympic medallists who have won a combined total of eight medals at the Asian Para Games, showcasing their exceptional achievements in para-sports.

Achievements of Pramod Bhagat

Pramod Bhagat, the 37-year-old reigning champion from the Tokyo Paralympics, is currently in outstanding form as he prepares for the upcoming games. Earlier this year, he clinched his record sixth world title in the men’s SL3 category at the BWF Para World Championships. Bhagat triumphed over Indonesia’s Muhammad Al Imran with a score of 21-12, 21-18, thereby securing his fourth consecutive singles gold medal at the championships.

Bhagat’s accomplishments have established him as the most decorated singles champion in the history of the world championships across all formats. His journey to success is particularly noteworthy considering he recently returned from an 18-month suspension due to a violation of the Badminton World Federation’s anti-doping regulations. Although this suspension prevented him from competing in the Paris Paralympics, Bhagat made a strong comeback in September, quickly regaining his competitive edge.

Since his return, Bhagat has amassed a total of 10 gold medals across various events in China, Nigeria, Australia, and Japan. His consistent performance at the Asian Para Games is also impressive, with six medals garnered between 2014 and 2023, including gold in the men’s singles SL3 event during the 2018 edition and another gold in men’s doubles at the 2022 Games along with four bronze medals.

Bhavina Patel’s Rise in Para Table Tennis

Alongside Bhagat, Bhavina Patel has also made significant strides in para table tennis, being recognised as one of India’s foremost players in the discipline. The Paralympic silver medallist has secured two medals at the Asian Para Games between 2018 and 2023, consisting of one silver and one bronze. Her inclusion as a flag bearer underscores her role in elevating the profile of para sports in India.

The selection of Bhagat and Patel comes at a crucial time as India readies itself for its participation in the fifth Asian Para Games, scheduled from October 18 to 24. Devendra Jhajharia, president of the Paralympic Committee of India, expressed that it is a matter of immense pride for the nation to have these two champions lead the contingent. He highlighted their exceptional contributions to Indian para-sports and their inspiring journeys.

Patel herself remarked on the significance of carrying the Tricolour, stating it is a proud moment to represent something greater than oneself. She expressed her excitement about walking into the Opening Ceremony alongside Bhagat and hopes that all athletes compete confidently while giving their best for India.

Official Send-off for the Indian Contingent

The Paralympic Committee of India is set to host a formal send-off ceremony for the Indian contingent at ITC Maurya in New Delhi on October 8, 2026. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya will serve as the chief guest for this event, while Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse will attend as the guest of honour. This ceremony will mark an important milestone as the athletes prepare to represent the nation in Nagoya.
