Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Detained Twice in Two Days Amid Ongoing Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, along with his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, faced detention for the second time in two days on Wednesday, as the Opposition’s protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar persisted. The siblings were intercepted by police near the Shangri-La hotel while attempting to proceed towards Jantar Mantar, a location known for political demonstrations.

During the incident, Priyanka reportedly resisted efforts to detain her, leading her to lie on the ground while clutching a copy of the Constitution. Images captured during the event depicted her being physically carried into a police van. The Congress party claimed that Priyanka was manhandled during the process, asserting that the treatment she received was unjustified.

The events unfolded just a day after Rahul Gandhi had climbed over police barricades, brandishing the national flag and breaching the secured area around Akashvani Bhawan, following an impediment to the Opposition’s march towards the Election Commission. The duo participated in an extended sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan, which lasted over eight hours before law enforcement intervened, resulting in the detention of Rahul, Priyanka, and approximately 250 other individuals, including several Members of Parliament.

Protests Continue to Escalate

Following their earlier release, the Opposition regrouped for a lunch hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. After the meal, they attempted to return to Jantar Mantar to continue their protests. Security measures were notably heightened, as buses carrying the MPs were halted near Ashoka Road, roughly one kilometre away from the intended protest site. The police presence was markedly robust, preventing any further movement.

During this latest confrontation, Rahul Gandhi reiterated the Opposition’s commitment to addressing what they term as “vote chori.” He alleged that around 300 MPs had requested a meeting with the Election Commission but had been denied the opportunity for dialogue. In response to a First Information Report (FIR) concerning the previous day’s events, he mentioned having faced 45 FIRs throughout his political career, expressing readiness to confront even more, stating that each FIR represented what he termed “a medal on my chest.”

The tension surrounding the protests intensified as Congress MPs, including notable figures such as Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Deepender Hooda, and Imran Pratapgarhi, were seen prominently displaying the Tricolour atop their buses, signalling solidarity and unwavering determination in their cause. However, the latest attempt to reach Jantar Mantar was thwarted once again, underscoring the significant challenges faced by the Opposition in their demonstration against the Election Commission.

Implications of Recent Developments

The recent detentions represent a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the Opposition and law enforcement in the capital. In a span of just 48 hours, the situation has evolved into a series of increasingly dramatic confrontations in the streets, reflecting a broader campaign initiated by the Opposition against the Election Commission.

Both Rahul and Priyanka were ultimately released after approximately two hours in custody, but this latest chapter of protests has drawn attention to the climate of dissent surrounding electoral governance in India. The political landscape remains charged as the Opposition continues to voice their grievances over election processes and the alleged disenfranchisement of voters.

The events in New Delhi serve as a flashpoint for discussions regarding electoral integrity, the rights of political expression, and the role of law enforcement in civil protests. As the situation develops, further responses from governmental authorities and the Election Commission are anticipated, to address the concerns raised by the Opposition and their supporters.
