The CSR Journal Magazine

The viral Mahakumbh Mela girl Monalisa Bhosle, tied the knot with her boyfriend in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The couple tied the knot under tight police protection because their families opposed the interfaith marriage.

The Mahakumbh girl Monalisa first rose to fame when a video of her selling flower garlands at the Mahakumbh went viral. In the video she appeared very simple yet beautiful, which captured the audience’s attention and made her an overnight internet sensation.

How did Monalisa and her husband meet?

A year ago, Monalisa and her now-husband Farman Khan met on social media. Farman Khan is an actor and model from Maharashtra. What started as a friendship turned into a close relationship. However, when the duo informed their respective families, they denied and opposed the interfaith marriage. After being pressured by her family to marry someone else, Monalisa decided to leave home and marry Farman. The duo moved to Kerala and requested protection from police authorities. Monalisa was shooting for her debut Malayalam film, Nagamma, in Poovar, when her father reached there to take her back. The couple then went to Thampanoor Police Station and requested protection.

The police conducted an inquiry and confirmed that Monalisa has the legal right to marry her partner. After getting the go-ahead from the authorities, the duo married at the Arumanoor Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.

Reaction from public figures

The wedding of viral Mahakumbh girl Monalisa has drawn attention from many political figures including Kerala’s Education Minister V. Sivankutty, M. V. Govindan (the state secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)), and A. A. Rahim, a Rajya Sabha MP.

In the pictures shared on social media, Monalisa is seen wearing a bright red saree, and her partner Farman wore traditional Kerala attire: a white shirt paired with a mundu (dhoti). A.A. Rahim, an RS MP called the wedding a true reflection of Kerala’s communal harmony, stating, “Marriages happen in heaven, and that heaven is Kerala.” Education Minister Sivankutty called it the ‘real Kerala story’.
