Actor Rohit Roy has articulated a stark divide between television and cinema, labelling the former as a “dustbin medium” in a recent interview. Known for his roles in iconic television shows such as ‘Swabhimaan’ and ‘Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand’, Roy expressed his views on the perceived lack of creativity within the Indian television industry.

While discussing the comparative merits of both forms of media, he asserted that cinema holds more value, particularly in its lasting impact on audiences. In an interview featured on the Kindle Cast YouTube channel, Roy reflected on the nature of television programmes. He suggested that people quicky forget them, much like yesterday’s news.

He commented that the overwhelming volume of content and its repetitive nature have diminished originality and innovation in television productions. Roy’s expertise isn’t limited to television; he has also made his mark in films like ‘Fashion’ and ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’. His perspective indicates a deep-rooted concern regarding the creativity deficit in modern Indian television, and he insinuated that many shows lack a unique narrative or emotional resonance.

Hierarchy in the Entertainment Industry

During the interview, Roy examined the prevalent hierarchy that often positions television actors lower than their film counterparts within the Bollywood framework. He emphasised that television actors frequently do not maintain the same level of composure and sophistication as film stars, which he believes affects their reputation in the industry.

Roy elaborated on the behavioural differences, highlighting a tendency among television actors to exhibit less restraint in public settings. He asserted that film stars typically project an image of “grace, dignity, stylishness, and coolness,” which he felt was lacking among some of their television peers. His observations included a critique of a particular unnamed television star’s attire at public events.

He remarked that conduct is crucial in the entertainment sector, stating, “You have to conduct yourself with a certain amount of grace, dignity.” This reveals his belief that a professional appearance and demeanour are essential for representation in the industry and that uncontrolled behaviour can reflect poorly on the field as a whole.

Roy’s Recent Works and Future Endeavours

Rohit Roy continues to engage with both television and film projects. He was last seen in the crime thriller Controll, released in 2025, alongside notable actors such as Thakur Anoop Singh, Priya Anand, and Denzil Smith.
