Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, is set to meet with US President Donald Trump on September 23 during the UN General Assembly session in New York. This meeting will occur alongside the annual gathering of world leaders, which serves as a significant platform for international dialogue.

The meeting’s scheduling has been confirmed by various media reports, which indicate that Sharif has been invited to a dinner hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for heads of state. The occasion will be held at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel, known for its central location on Madison Avenue, providing an opportunity for leaders to converse in a more informal setting.

During this event, Sharif is anticipated to engage with multiple global leaders, allowing for diplomatic exchanges beyond his meeting with Trump. This interaction will mark their latest face-to-face engagement since the inaugural Board of Peace meeting in Washington back in February.

Previous Engagements and Agenda Items

Sharif’s scheduled meeting with Trump is notable as it follows their past interactions, including meetings at the White House in September 2025 and the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in October 2025. Such engagements reflect an ongoing dialogue between the two nations on various issues of mutual concern.

During his appearance at the UN General Assembly on September 25, Sharif is expected to address critical subjects, notably the Indus Waters Treaty. This treaty, established in 1960 with World Bank mediation, governs the water-sharing protocol between India and Pakistan. India suspended the treaty in April 2025 after the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, asserting that the suspension would remain until Pakistan ceased its alleged cross-border terrorism activities.

The Pakistani government has denied these accusations and dismissed India’s claims, indicating that the issue remains a contentious point in bilateral relations. Sources suggest that several countries, including traditional allies, have pledged their support to Pakistan regarding its stance on the treaty.

Focus on Security Arrangements

In addition to discussing the water treaty, Sharif is anticipated to highlight the newly formed trilateral collective security arrangement established with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye. This agreement, known as the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, was signed on August 7 in Makkah and establishes a framework for collective defence, treating an attack on one member as a threat to all three countries.

The upcoming high-level General Debate at the 81st UN General Assembly is scheduled for September 22 to 26, with Sharif listed as the fourth speaker in the latter part of the session on September 25. His remarks are expected to encapsulate significant issues affecting regional stability and international cooperation.
