BRICS members also expressed a commitment to adopting the Leaders’ Statement on the Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence, marking a significant step towards global cooperation in this domain.

Collaborative Efforts in Energy and Industrial Development

The BRICS grouping detailed various initiatives aimed at enhancing industrial and financial cooperation, particularly in relation to AI. The BRICS Centre for Industrial Competencies will assist manufacturing entities, including small and medium enterprises, in integrating Industry 4.0 and advanced digital production technologies, closely aligned with national priorities.

Emphasis was placed on the integration of digitalisation and AI within energy systems. Technological advancements, including data analytics, are seen as vital in improving grid management and operational efficiency while strengthening cyber-resilient infrastructure.

Member countries welcomed the introduction of the Guiding Principles on Smart Grids and Energy Storage, along with plans to establish a BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence for Smart Grids. These efforts aim to enhance energy cooperation and promote advancements in the sector.

The declaration also addressed the importance of sharing insights on cybersecurity, AI, and emerging technologies such as quantum computing within the financial sector. The BRICS Rapid Information Security Channel and Fintech Working Group were acknowledged for their roles in fostering a collaborative approach to assess the risks and opportunities brought about by these technologies.

Importantly, the BRICS nations recognised the need for intellectual property protection in the AI landscape. Cooperation among Intellectual Property Offices was promoted, particularly concerning the applications of AI while ensuring the protection of rights in a digital context.

Moreover, the declaration highlighted the need for just compensation to rights holders and addressed issues related to the misrepresentation of knowledge and cultural values within AI datasets, which could lead to potential risks.

In the area of education, BRICS countries encouraged collaborations focused on securing the ethical use of AI technologies, promoting digital literacy, academic mobility, and fostering institutional partnerships.
