Chinese President Xi Jinping articulated on Sunday that the concept of “might makes right” should be discarded from international relations. He expressed this view during his address at the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi, highlighting the necessity for a global order founded on fairness and mutual respect. Xi’s remarks came amid significant tensions between the United States and various nations over Washington’s foreign policies on trade and international conduct.

During his speech, Xi underscored the significance of the Global South, describing it as a pivotal force in the transition towards a multipolar world. He articulated a vision in which international rules are formulated collectively, with equal application to all countries, irrespective of size, power, or wealth. The Chinese President stated that every nation should be viewed as an equal participant in the global community, promoting the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in internal matters.

Advocacy for Multilateral Reforms

In his address, Xi emphasised the need for increased representation of developing nations in global institutions. He encouraged BRICS nations to advocate for the authority of the United Nations and pursue reforms in multilateral organisations such as the World Trade Organisation and the international financial systems. His assertion was that only through collaborative efforts can equitable practices be established on the world stage.

Xi’s remarks included a strong insistence on upholding the rule of law in international relations, advocating that international legislation should not exhibit double standards. He posited that an absence of globally accepted norms leads to disorder, likening it to a chaotic intersection devoid of traffic lights. This metaphor served to highlight the critical need for a structured and organized approach to international relations.

He urged fellow BRICS members to reinforce their collective efforts, aiming to turn the association into a proactive force in the realm of international governance. Strengthened unity among emerging economies and the Global South was promoted as essential in shaping a fair global framework.

Focus on Artificial Intelligence Cooperation

Xi Jinping further discussed the importance of establishing a global governance framework for artificial intelligence (AI). He called for cooperation among countries to reach consensus on regulations surrounding this swiftly evolving technology. Xi insisted that developments in AI should prioritise positive contributions to society and enhance shared prosperity across nations.

He proposed the establishment of a BRICS open-source community for AI, which would facilitate collaboration in the development and implementation of advanced language models. Alongside this initiative, Xi announced plans for seminars and training programmes centred on AI, emphasising the significance of collective knowledge-sharing to harness the benefits of such technologies.

Additionally, Xi highlighted the need for robust economic cooperation among BRICS states, advocating for strategies aimed at ensuring stable industrial and supply chains. He underscored the importance of nurturing an integrated economic market that encompasses emerging economies and nations within the Global South. He also reaffirmed China’s commitment to ongoing openness and development collaboration with other countries.
