On September 13, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral discussion with Uganda Vice President Jessica Alupo at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, coinciding with the 18th BRICS Summit. Alupo’s visit to New Delhi began on September 11, when she was welcomed by Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Jayant Chaudhary. Uganda represented one of the ten partner countries participating in the ongoing summit.

The discussions took place as India hosted the two-day BRICS Summit under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This engagement highlights the significance of multilateral dialogues aimed at strengthening international relationships.

Earlier on the same day, Prime Minister Modi also met with the Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who attended the summit in his capacity as chair of ASEAN. This meeting aligns with India’s Act East policy and enhances its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN member states.

BRICS Summit Highlights and Expectations

While addressing the participants of the BRICS Summit, PM Modi underscored the growing expectations from the world as the grouping prepares to enter its third decade. He emphasised the need for tangible outcomes rather than mere commitments and ideas moving forward. Modi expressed confidence that through collaborative efforts, BRICS could meet these global expectations effectively.

The Prime Minister extended good wishes to China, which is set to host the next BRICS Summit in 2027. He praised all leaders and their teams for their contributions towards the successful organisation of the current summit in New Delhi.

During the summit, discussions centred on “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.” Modi highlighted the increasing trust of Global South nations in the BRICS framework and underscored key initiatives related to areas such as disaster management, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and environmental issues.

International Collaborative Spirit and Future of BRICS

PM Modi articulated that India has promoted the principles of friendship, partnership, and cooperation through the BRICS platform. He urged that this cooperation should include a variety of stakeholders such as entrepreneurs, farmers, researchers, women, youth, and everyday citizens to ensure inclusivity.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who also participated in the summit, advocated for a more significant role for BRICS in representing the interests of the Global South. He called for the organisation to function as an “active, stabilising and positive force in international affairs.” These discussions reflect the broader vision for the future of BRICS and its role on the global stage.
