Fifteen-year-old Tanvi Patri clinched the girls’ singles U17 title at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships, achieving this feat in an all-Indian final against Shaina Manimuthu. The match took place on Sunday, when Patri, the second seed, came from behind after losing the first game to ultimately win 11-15, 15-10, and 15-12.

The Odisha native’s previous successes include a victory at the Pontianak International Challenge and the All India Junior U19 Badminton Ranking Tournament this year. With this win, she has secured the U17 title, following her triumph in the U15 category in 2024.

Path to the Final

Tanvi’s journey to the final faced challenges, starting with a first-round bye. In her opening match, she was tested by Zhou Jing Li from China. After narrowly winning the first game 18-16, Zhou retaliated to take the second game 15-12, leading to a crucial final game. Patri maintained her composure and secured the third game 15-13 to advance. Following this, she overcame Japan’s Shizuku Kashio with straight games of 15-9 and 15-12.

The quarter-finals saw Patri defeat Lin Heng Men of China with scores of 15-8 and 15-8. Her semi-final match against Yu Ying Gui also proved to be a tough encounter. Patri won the first game 15-9 but lost the second 11-15. In the decider, she demonstrated her mental strength, taking the game 15-11 to book a place in the final.

Final Match Dynamics

Shaina Manimuthu, seeded sixth, reached the title clash with notable performances throughout the tournament. She defeated Japan’s Yui Itabashi in the quarter-finals and faced Anon Okimoto in the semi-finals, winning that match 15-13, 15-12. The final match served as a rematch of their earlier encounter in the All India Junior U19 Badminton Ranking Tournament in Bengaluru, which added an extra layer of competition.

In the final, Manimuthu initially took the lead with a 15-11 win in the first game. However, Patri bounced back, winning the second game 15-10 and ultimately sealing the title with a decisive 15-12 victory in the third game. This win marks India’s retention of the U17 girls’ singles title for the second consecutive year, following Diksha Sudhakar’s victory in 2025.

Additional Highlights from the Championships

Alongside Patri’s achievement, Shaina Manimuthu’s performance earned her a silver medal, adding to her accolades after winning the U15 Asian title the previous year. Furthermore, the Indian contingent also celebrated success in the U15 boys’ doubles event, where Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma secured a bronze medal. Their campaign concluded in the semi-finals after a loss to the pair from Chinese Taipei, Bo Lin Ho and Jui En Hou, with scores of 5-15, 10-15.

These achievements underscore India’s growing prominence in badminton on a continental level, showcasing the talent and determination of young athletes. The results from this championship are a promising indicator of future performances on both national and international stages.
