The Central Institute of Orthopaedics (CIO) at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi has successfully performed its inaugural Robot-Assisted Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery. This development marks a significant advancement in the provision of orthopaedic care within the public healthcare system.

This pioneering surgery was conducted under the direction of Prof. Dr Sumit Sural, who is the head of CIO. The procedure took place in a well-coordinated effort by a skilled surgical team supervised by Dr Bhagwati Prasad Sharma, the Consultant Professor and Head of Unit. Their expertise facilitated the use of state-of-the-art robotic technology in orthopaedic surgery.

This major operation was conducted entirely free of charge for a 75-year-old male patient from an economically disadvantaged background, under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, exemplifying the commitment to making advanced healthcare accessible to all sections of society.
