Cyclone Arnab Weakens as IMD Issues Hailstorm and Thunderstorm Alerts for Delhi-NCR

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is preparing for a day of unsettled weather on Thursday, October 29, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across various states. The forecast includes thunderstorms and potential hailstorms, particularly affecting northern regions. As the remnants of Cyclone Arnab move inland and gradually weaken, the weather is expected to remain particularly dynamic across eastern and central India.

The IMD’s weather bulletin, released on Wednesday, October 28, indicates that isolated areas in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, east Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on Thursday. Additionally, heavy rain is anticipated in isolated locations within the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coastal Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Sikkim.

Thunderstorms and Hailstorm Alerts for Delhi-NCR

Delhi, along with Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab, may encounter thunderstorms that could be accompanied by hailstorms at isolated locations on Thursday. The IMD has also predicted thundersqualls, with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph across Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and Jharkhand. Furthermore, isolated hailstorm activity is expected in east Rajasthan, while thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and east Madhya Pradesh.

The weather system is poised to maintain unsettled conditions across the northern plains. The IMD forecasts fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over east Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on October 29 and 30. As a result, residents are advised to exercise caution while travelling, as wet road conditions may pose risks.

In light of the anticipated weather, local authorities are preparing for potential disruptions, particularly in transportation and agriculture. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and stay updated on the latest weather advisories.

Cyclone Arnab’s Impact and Progression

The recent weather developments follow the passage of very severe cyclonic storm Arnab, which made landfall on the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam during the early hours of Wednesday. The IMD confirmed that the landfall process was completed by 8:30 am on October 28, with the storm moving entirely over land.

Initially, the system was projected to move north-northwestwards and gradually weaken, transitioning first into a cyclonic storm and subsequently into a deep depression. Despite this weakening, the system’s influence is expected to persist, resulting in continued rainfall across various parts of the region.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh is forecasted to receive heavy rainfall in isolated areas on Thursday, alongside strong winds. The IMD has also warned of squally winds along the West Bengal coast and the adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal on October 29. These weather patterns are indicative of the ongoing influence of the northeast monsoon season, which has commenced over southern India.

As the retreating weather systems and associated atmospheric disturbances continue to affect rainfall across numerous regions, residents are urged to prepare for possible adverse weather conditions in the coming days. The IMD will provide regular updates to ensure public safety and awareness.
