Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Approves Cashless Medical Cover for 15 Lakh Education Employees

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a significant step to support its education workforce by approving a new scheme that offers cashless medical treatment to teachers, non-teaching staff, and their dependents. The decision was made during Thursday’s cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The initiative, first announced by CM Yogi on Teachers’ Day 2025, will now formally cover nearly 15 lakh employees associated with the Basic and Secondary Education Departments. The estimated cost of implementing the scheme is around Rs 448 crore, and it aims to provide treatment in both government and empanelled private hospitals under a model similar to Ayushman Bharat.

Under the plan, teachers in aided and self-financed schools, including honorary and vocational subject experts, will be eligible for in-patient (IPD) treatment, along with their family members. Secondary Education Minister Gulab Devi noted that approximately 2.97 lakh beneficiaries from this category are expected to receive coverage, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 89.25 crore.

Over 11.95 Lakh Basic Education Staff to Get Cashless Medical Cover

Similarly, personnel associated with the Basic Education Council including Shiksha Mitras, special educators, instructors, wardens, teachers of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, and cooks under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Yojana will also benefit. Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh said this segment covers over 11.95 lakh employees, with an annual outlay of about Rs 358.61 crore and an average premium of Rs 3,000 per person.

To ensure proper verification, district-level committees headed by the District Inspector of Schools and the Basic Education Officer will oversee coverage for teachers in self-financed recognised schools. Employees and dependents already enrolled under schemes like PM-JAY or the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Abhiyan will not be eligible.

The scheme is expected to bring financial relief and access to quality healthcare for lakhs of education workers across the state, strengthening support for those who play a key role in shaping the future.
