UP Man Swept Away By Crocodile During Funeral Rites at Saryu River

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh, where a 30-year-old man was reportedly attacked and taken by a crocodile while he was bathing in the Saryu River. The man, identified as Deepak Sharma, has not been located since the attack.

Sharma, a resident of Greater Noida, had gone to Umri village in the Gonda district to attend the funeral of his mother-in-law, Urmila Devi. After assisting in the preparations for the funeral pyre at the riverbank, he proceeded to bathe in the river, where the crocodile suddenly emerged.

Witnesses described the events as unfolding rapidly, with the crocodile allegedly seizing Sharma by the head and dragging him into the water within mere seconds. Eyewitness Rajesh Shukla noted that warnings were issued to Sharma prior to his entry into the river, but he chose to disregard these cautionary messages.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Following the attack, the commotion attracted numerous onlookers, and villagers, along with local boatmen, quickly initiated a search for Sharma. Despite their immediate response, by the evening, no traces of him had been uncovered.

Local police and district officials arrived shortly after the incident was reported. A search operation was promptly launched, which included the involvement of the revenue department. However, these initial efforts proved unsuccessful in locating Sharma.

To escalate the search, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team has been dispatched from Lucknow. The family, alongside villagers, anxiously awaits the team’s arrival, with hope remaining that Sharma’s body may still be recovered.

Community Impact and Concerns

The tragic event has left the local community in shock, mourning the loss of Sharma while grappling with fear surrounding wildlife encounters at the river. Many residents have expressed concerns regarding safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, particularly along the riverbanks where crocodile sightings are increasingly reported.

As search efforts continue, the emotional toll on Sharma’s family and community members is evident. Grieving relatives have gathered to support one another during this difficult time, sharing memories of Sharma and reflecting on the circumstances leading up to the unfortunate event.

Authorities have indicated a need to enhance public awareness about the potential dangers posed by crocodiles in the area, urging locals to remain vigilant and heed safety warnings when near the water. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife interactions in rural areas.
