Understanding Alcohol’s Impact on the Liver

The CSR Journal Magazine

The assertion that detox drinks can reverse liver damage is a misconception, according to Dr Aditya (Bhimsi) Kandoriya, a consultant GI, HPB, and bariatric surgeon at Sterling Hospital in Rajkot. He emphasised the importance of understanding how alcohol affects the liver before considering any detox products. When alcohol is consumed, the liver metabolises it into harmful substances such as acetaldehyde, which can damage liver cells. This process initiates a series of reactions that can lead to inflammation and fat accumulation, ultimately resulting in scar tissue formation over time.

Dr Kandoriya explained that the longer the liver is exposed to alcohol, the greater the risk of damage. Continuous drinking can lead to serious conditions, including alcohol-related hepatitis, which is characterised by inflammation that may cause symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and jaundice. Therefore, recognising the effects of alcohol on liver health is crucial for anyone considering detoxification.

Possibility of Reversing Early Liver Damage

Despite the potential for liver damage, Dr Kandoriya reassured that there is hope for recovery, particularly if alcohol consumption is ceased early. He identified the initial stage of fatty liver as a point where the liver can fully recover. If individuals stop drinking at this stage, they can prevent further damage and potentially restore liver health.

However, the surgeon warned that continued alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing more severe conditions, including alcohol-related hepatitis. This stage of liver damage is marked by significant inflammation, leading to various health issues. Thus, the most effective strategy for liver recovery remains abstaining from alcohol, regardless of the current state of liver health.

Dr Kandoriya also noted that liver damage can become irreversible when cirrhosis develops. This condition arises from persistent inflammation, leading to fibrosis, where scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue. Once cirrhosis occurs, it can severely impair liver function and is often irreversible.

Detox Products and Their Efficacy

The notion that detox drinks and cleansing diets can remedy alcohol-related liver damage has been strongly refuted by Dr Kandoriya. He stated that the idea of a quick detox to fix a damaged liver is fundamentally flawed. Recovery is contingent on the individual’s decision to stop drinking and the extent of liver damage already present.

Moreover, the surgeon cautioned against the use of commercial detox products and herbal supplements, as some ingredients may pose additional risks to liver health. In certain cases, these products can exacerbate liver injury rather than promote recovery. Therefore, individuals are advised to approach detox claims with scepticism.

For optimal liver recovery, Dr Kandoriya recommended a balanced diet that includes protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. He emphasised the need for individuals who have a history of heavy drinking or alcohol dependence to seek medical assistance, as withdrawal can be challenging. Additionally, managing other health factors such as weight, diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels is essential for overall liver health.
