Beyond athletics, Raj is known for her work promoting accessibility, equal opportunities and the rights of persons with disabilities. Her journey combines competitive sport with sustained efforts to make public spaces and institutions more inclusive.

Suvarna Raj Wins Gold at Asian Para Games 2026

Raj delivered a consistent performance in the women’s F54 discus throw final, recording four throws beyond 15 metres across her six attempts. Her winning throw of 15.66 metres came on her fifth attempt.

Iran’s Shahla Hadidi won silver with a throw of 15.45 metres, while Vietnam’s Thi Ngoc Thuy Nguyen secured bronze with 14.65 metres.

Coached by Pintu Nagar, Raj has competed in para-athletics since 2017 and has represented India at three Asian Para Games. Her latest gold medal adds to a series of performances at national and international competitions.

Earlier in 2026, she won bronze in the women’s F54/55 discus throw at the Dubai World Para Athletics Grand Prix. She also secured gold in discus throw and silver in shot put at the Canberra Track Meet in Australia in January.

Early Life and Sporting Journey

Raj was born and raised in Nagpur, Maharashtra. She contracted polio at the age of two, which affected both her legs, and has used mobility aids, including a wheelchair.

Despite the challenges she encountered, she pursued her education and developed a lasting interest in sports. She completed a Bachelor of Commerce, a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Commerce at Nagpur University, followed by a Master of Social Work through Indira Gandhi National Open University.

Her sporting journey initially included powerlifting and table tennis. She competed in table tennis at national and international levels and won two medals at the Thailand Para Table Tennis Open in Bangkok in 2013. She represented India at the 2014 Asian Para Games in South Korea before moving towards para-athletics in 2017.

What Is the F54 Discus Throw Category?

F54 is a classification in para-athletics for seated field athletes with impairments affecting trunk and lower-body function. Competitors throw from a specialised chair and rely on their arms and upper-body strength to generate power and distance.

Raj’s 15.66-metre effort in this category earned her the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Para Games, placing her ahead of competitors from Iran and Vietnam.

Suvarna Raj’s Work Beyond Sports

Raj is also an accessibility specialist, social worker and disability rights advocate. Through her work, she has pushed for barrier-free public infrastructure, improved access to education and employment, and greater participation of persons with disabilities in public life.

She has conducted accessibility audits to identify barriers in buildings, public facilities and transport systems. She has also contributed to initiatives linked to the Accessible India Campaign and served as an ambassador for accessible elections through the Election Commission of India.

Her advocacy has included supporting legal protections for persons with disabilities and promoting the implementation of disability rights legislation.

International Recognition for Disability Advocacy

In 2024, Raj received the Changemaker award at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Action Awards in Rome, recognising her work to advance disability rights and inclusion.

She also received the National Youth Award in 2015. These honours recognise contributions beyond sporting achievements, including her efforts to improve accessibility and influence public policy.

Suvarna Raj’s Asian Para Games gold highlights her continued sporting success, while her advocacy demonstrates her wider commitment to building a more accessible and inclusive society.
