OpenAI Expands Access to AI Models on Google Cloud While Maintaining Microsoft as Primary Partner

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI is broadening its reach by introducing its artificial intelligence models to Google Cloud, marking a significant development in the tech landscape. This initiative indicates OpenAI’s intention to cater to enterprise customers, moving beyond its consumer-focused offerings. The integration aims to facilitate access to advanced AI tools for developers and businesses.

Earlier this year, in April, Microsoft’s exclusive partnership with OpenAI concluded, allowing other cloud providers to incorporate OpenAI’s technology. Following this, Amazon began offering OpenAI models via its AWS platform. With Google Cloud now joining the ranks, OpenAI’s models are accessible across all three major cloud service providers in the United States.

In the upcoming weeks, users of Google Cloud will gain access to OpenAI’s cutting-edge products, including the newly launched GPT-6 Astra and the Codex coding tool. These offerings will be integrated into Google’s Model Garden and Antigravity coding platform, enhancing the tools available for developers.

Benefits for Businesses Using Google Cloud

This development is advantageous for businesses, as they can now procure OpenAI’s technology directly through the Google Cloud Marketplace. This allows companies to utilise their existing cloud budgets without the need to transfer sensitive data between different platforms to access ChatGPT-like features.

Despite Google’s own Gemini AI being a competitor to OpenAI, cloud service providers are increasingly offering a range of options to their clients. This strategy helps avoid vendor lock-in, allowing businesses the flexibility to choose the best tools for their needs. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian emphasised the importance of providing a diverse selection of models, including those from OpenAI, to ensure customers can select the most suitable model for their projects.

OpenAI has reiterated that Microsoft continues to be its primary cloud partner, highlighting the ongoing collaboration between the two companies despite the recent expansion to Google Cloud.

Growth of Google Cloud and Competitive Landscape

Google Cloud is experiencing substantial growth, with a reported revenue increase of approximately 82 per cent in the second quarter of this year, up from 63 per cent in the first quarter. This surge is attributed to a heightened demand for custom chips and AI models. In contrast, Amazon and Microsoft recorded cloud growth rates of 37 per cent and 42 per cent, respectively, during the same period.

According to data from corporate card issuer Ramp, a significant portion of business AI budgets is currently allocated to OpenAI and Anthropic. Google is also intensifying its efforts in the AI sector, having launched its next-generation Gemini 4 Argon model in September, further enhancing its competitive position.

The relationship between Google and OpenAI has evolved since OpenAI’s inception in 2015, which was partly aimed at challenging Google’s leadership in AI research. The publication of the influential “Transformer” paper by Google researchers in 2017 significantly advanced AI technology. OpenAI played a crucial role in popularising this technology with the launch of ChatGPT. The two companies briefly collaborated last year when OpenAI disclosed that it was utilising Google’s infrastructure to operate ChatGPT and its API.

Currently, OpenAI is seeking to secure a substantial $30 billion investment to achieve a valuation of $1.4 trillion, driven by the competitive landscape, particularly as its rival Anthropic prepares for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Presently, the integration with Google Cloud is in an invite-only preview phase, with a full public rollout anticipated shortly.
