Tesla Reports 72.5% Increase in European Sales in September, Reaching 68,776 Units

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tesla has experienced a notable surge in its sales across Europe, reflecting the company’s continued expansion in a competitive market. In September, new-car registrations for Tesla vehicles rose by 72.5 per cent compared to the same month last year, reaching a total of 68,776 units. This figure encompasses the European Union, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

The increase in registrations marks a significant improvement from August, which saw only a 4 per cent rise in sales. August is typically a slower month for car registrations in Europe due to many dealerships closing for summer holidays. The latest figures indicate that European consumers are increasingly choosing Tesla vehicles, despite the growing presence of Chinese manufacturers in the region.

Chinese electric vehicle makers have seen substantial growth in Europe in recent years, largely due to their cost-effective electric and hybrid vehicle offerings. This has posed challenges for established European automotive brands like Volkswagen and Renault, which have reported declines in sales. The competitive landscape is shifting as consumers explore diverse options in the electric vehicle market.

Performance of Competitors

In contrast to Tesla’s impressive growth, several Chinese manufacturers have also reported significant increases in their sales figures. BYD, for instance, saw a remarkable 99 per cent rise in registrations, amounting to 49,953 vehicles in September. Similarly, SAIC Motor’s registrations grew by nearly 24 per cent, reaching 41,987 units, while Leapmotor experienced a more than fourfold increase, logging 14,594 vehicles.

On the other hand, traditional European automakers faced challenges in this evolving market. Volkswagen reported a decline of 2.9 per cent in sales, totalling 308,474 units, while Renault’s sales fell by 0.7 per cent, amounting to 114,726 vehicles. These figures underscore the shifting dynamics within the automotive sector as consumer preferences evolve towards electric and hybrid options.

Tesla’s growth trajectory comes at a time when the company is also seeking regulatory approval for its full self-driving (FSD) technology within the European Union. The Netherlands became the first EU country to approve this system, which assists drivers in changing lanes and navigating around obstacles. Although FSD does not render vehicles fully autonomous, it is designed to be used only with an attentive driver.

Market Trends and Future Outlook

The European market for battery-electric vehicles has seen a substantial increase, growing by nearly 60 per cent last month. Additionally, registrations for hybrid-electric cars rose by 5.3 per cent, while plug-in hybrid models experienced a 24 per cent increase. Overall, ACEA reported a 10 per cent rise in monthly passenger-car registrations across Europe, with a 9.3 per cent increase in the EU.

Sales figures varied across major European markets, with Germany witnessing a 9 per cent increase, France at 12 per cent, and Italy showing a 9.8 per cent rise. These statistics indicate a robust recovery in the automotive sector, driven by the growing acceptance of electric vehicles and hybrids among consumers.

As Tesla continues to expand its footprint in Europe, the company is poised to navigate a competitive landscape that includes both established brands and emerging players. The ongoing developments in electric vehicle technology and regulatory approvals will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future of the automotive market in the region.
