Ujjain City Qazi Khaliqur Rahman has called upon the Muslim community to maintain calm and avoid unnecessary gatherings in market areas as the current situation surrounding the Shahi Masjid continues to develop. In his statement on September 28, the Qazi urged residents to refrain from listening to unverified information that may cause panic, advising them instead to remain within their homes.

He emphasised that the issues relating to the mosque were resolved the prior night and reassured the community that there was no need to venture out. “The matter regarding the mosque was concluded last night. There is no need for anyone to come outside,” he stated.

Rahman further encouraged the community to allow the agreed-upon works to proceed without interference and to dismiss any circulating rumours. His focus on maintaining peace reflects the necessity for stability amid ongoing tensions in the city.

Police Response to Protests and Security Measures

Earlier on the same day, local police intervened using tear gas shells to disperse protesters following reports of unrest. Demonstrations against the proposed demolition of the Shahi Masjid were part of preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh, leading to acts of stone-pelting. The presence of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) was also noted in the area as tensions escalated.

Over 2,500 police officers have been deployed to maintain order, with Superintendent of Police (SP) Pradeep Sharma overseeing the situation. An alert has been issued citywide due to the heightened tensions. Sharma reassured the public that appropriate measures were being taken to manage the disturbances and that authorities had anticipated potential unrest.

“All communities are cooperating in their respective areas,” Sharma remarked. He clarified that the demolition work had been initiated by the mosque committee itself and continued in the face of unrest, emphasising the need for order and collaboration.

Continued Demolition Efforts Amidst Unrest

The current demolition efforts at the Shahi Masjid include a section that was already removed by members of the community as part of road-widening initiatives. However, the overall developments have sparked disputes among various groups, leading to heightened sensitivities around the issue.

On the ground, scenes of chaos emerged with protesters attempting to navigate through narrow passageways. Reports indicated that women were sometimes pushed forward as part of the crowd movement. During these attempts, some individuals resorted to throwing stones at police personnel who were deployed to ensure public safety.

Despite these challenges, leaders from the Muslim community are actively working to disseminate messages urging calm through video announcements. SP Sharma confirmed that law enforcement has successfully gained control of the situation, with demolition activities continuing under secure conditions. He reiterated that maintaining public order is a priority, and efforts to cooperate with all community members will remain ongoing.
