Two Indian Javelin Throwers Qualify for Commonwealth Games Amid Neeraj Chopra’s Injury Concerns

The CSR Journal Magazine

As uncertainty surrounds Neeraj Chopra’s participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, two Indian javelin throwers, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh, have successfully qualified for the event. On June 13, 2026, both athletes achieved their career-best throws, with Yadav recording a distance of 83.76 metres and Singh 82.93 metres. Their performances met the qualification standard of 82.61 metres established by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

The opportunity for qualification arose during the last available competition of the season, held as part of the Indian Athletics Series in Ludhiana. Initially, the Federation Cup, conducted in May, was designated as the qualifying event, but due to adverse windy conditions that prevented athletes from reaching the required mark, another chance was added.

Impact of Sachin Yadav’s Injury on Indian Athletics

The successful qualifications of Rohit and Yashvir provided a much-needed boost to Indian athletics, especially following the disappointing news regarding Sachin Yadav. The World Championships finalist had to withdraw from the competition due to an elbow injury and is now likely to miss the upcoming Games in Glasgow. Notably, Yadav, who placed fourth at the Tokyo World Championships last year, has not yet achieved the CWG qualification mark, with his best throw this season recorded at 81.95 metres in New Delhi this April.

Throughout the current season, the 26-year-old has faced several challenges, finishing fifth at the Federation Cup with a throw of 79.07 metres and eighth at his Diamond League debut in Rome, where he managed only 79.18 metres, significantly below his personal best of 86.27 metres.

Growing Competition in Javelin Throwing

Despite the setbacks, India remains a prominent force in the javelin throw discipline. Following Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, there has been a notable increase in interest and performance within the sport across the country. However, Indian throwers now contend with rising competition, particularly from Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, who recently set a new career-best throw of 92.62 metres during the Rome Diamond League.

Neeraj Chopra’s absence from the Doha Diamond League on June 19 has also raised concerns among fans and stakeholders. The accomplished athlete is currently recuperating from a back injury in Switzerland. With a stellar record that includes gold and silver medals from the 2020 and 2024 Olympics, Chopra’s performance is highly anticipated. He commenced his Diamond League journey last year in Doha, where he exceeded the 90-metre mark.

At present, the 28-year-old is completing a 47-day off-season training camp in Bienne, Switzerland. He is accompanied by his long-time physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha and coach Jai Choudhary, who are both integral to his preparation for the imminent Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
