Two Dead, Five Injured as Ganesh Idol Collapses During Arrival Ceremony in Mumbai

The CSR Journal Magazine

A festive gathering turned tragic in south Mumbai on Saturday night when a Ganesh idol fell during an arrival ceremony, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to five others, including two children. The incident occurred around 10 pm on Balaram Merchant Road near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk in Bhuleshwar, where devotees had assembled for the arrival of Bhuleshwaracha Raja.

According to civic officials, the structure carrying the idol collapsed during the ceremony, impacting attendees in the densely populated area. Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene as onlookers scrambled for safety following the sudden accident.

Emergency services promptly responded to the scene, deploying teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, and traffic police, as well as personnel from the civic ward and the 108 ambulance service to manage rescue and relief efforts. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Identification of Victims

The fatalities were confirmed as 33-year-old Sanket Nevshe and 30-year-old Brijesh Hemant Joshi. Local authorities have stated that the five injured individuals include 38-year-old Vaibhav Ghenand, 25-year-old Pawan Chaurasiya, 26-year-old Kunal Kashid, and two children—five-year-old Lavanya Ganer and seven-year-old Divya Ganer.

Civic officials reported that all five injured persons are currently in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical care. The rapid response of emergency services is believed to have minimised further injuries or fatalities during the chaotic aftermath.

The event took place as Mumbai prepares for its annual Ganeshotsav—a ten-day festival that attracts large crowds across Maharashtra. As part of the celebrations, devotees typically install and worship idols of Lord Ganapati in their homes and at public pandals, eventually immersing them at the conclusion of the festival.

Concerns About Safety Measures

This incident raises significant concerns regarding crowd safety and effective arrangements during high-attendance religious processions. The preparations for the Ganeshotsav draw thousands of participants, and organisers typically implement numerous safety protocols to ensure a smooth and secure observance. However, tragedies such as this underscore the importance of continuous assessment and adaptation of safety measures.

Further details regarding the exact cause of the idol structure’s collapse have not been disclosed. Investigations are likely to follow as authorities seek to identify any lapses in safety protocols or building integrity. Eyewitness accounts may contribute to understanding the sequence of events leading to this unfortunate incident.

The Bhuleshwar community, along with the broader population of Mumbai, is understandably shaken by the event, with many expressing condolences to the families of those affected. Public sentiment often becomes heightened during such festivals, and the tragic loss of life adds an unexpected and somber dimension to the celebrations.
