Thousands of Fish Found Dead in Mumbai’s Historic Banganga Tank

The CSR Journal Magazine

Thousands of fish have reportedly died in the Banganga Tank, a significant and sacred site in South Mumbai, during the annual pind daan rituals. This situation has raised serious concerns regarding water quality, as well as pollution within the heritage water body. The sudden increase in fish deaths has led to a strong foul odour in the surrounding Malabar Hill area, drawing attention from both local residents and environmental activists.

Residents have alleged that the large-scale rituals conducted during pitru paksha, which commenced on September 26, may be a factor in the observed pollution. Historically, while fish deaths have occurred in previous years during this period, this year’s occurrences have been noted much earlier in the ritual fortnight. Many locals believe that the disposal of food and offerings into the water may be exacerbating the tank’s pollution levels, further reducing its oxygen content.

Local priests have also voiced concerns about the condition of the tank, which is home to various species of fish. Despite the claims of ritual-related pollution, certain priests insist that only specific materials are intended for disposal outside the tank. Sevalal Tiwari, a priest with years of experience at Banganga, stated that the water is touched only three times during the ritual, and the materials used are placed in drums situated outside the tank.

Community Engagement and Responses

In light of these alarming events, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has convened a meeting with local residents and priests to address the rising fish deaths and discuss measures to safeguard the aquatic ecosystem of the tank. A gathering took place on Monday, where residents expressed their concerns and discussed potential strategies to combat further damage.

Residents remarked that although fish deaths are an annual occurrence, this year’s fatalities have emerged earlier than in previous years. They mentioned that he is working closely with the BMC to facilitate the removal of dead fish from the tank to improve the water quality and health of remaining aquatic life.

The Banganga Tank holds special significance in Hindu culture and is historically associated with several legends, particularly with the epic Ramayana. According to local lore, Lord Rama, on his journey towards Lanka to rescue Sita, became thirsty and instructed Lakshmana to find water. It is believed that Lakshmana shot an arrow into the ground at that location, which tapped into an underground stream of the Ganga, leading to the creation of the Banganga Tank.

Historical Significance and Continued Rituals

As a site revered deeply in Hindu tradition, the Banganga Tank is also linked to the deity Parshuram, recognised as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This historical connection adds to the significance of rituals conducted at the tank. While the current challenges pose a risk to the heritage site, the community and spiritual leaders are hopeful that proactive measures will be taken to restore and preserve the water body for future generations.

The ongoing situation has garnered attention from various sectors, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach to safeguard the tank. Residents remain vigilant, ensuring that the rituals remain respectful of the environment while also maintaining their cultural traditions.

As discussions continue between officials, residents, and priests, there is an understanding that a balance must be struck to protect the tank’s ecosystem while upholding its cultural importance. The outcome of these discussions may prove crucial for the future well-being of Banganga Tank and its aquatic inhabitants.
