The White House has denied entry to reporters from CNN and MS NOW on Saturday morning, following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ban on these organisations along with Politico. The President labelled their reporting as “fake news,” marking a significant escalation in his ongoing efforts to limit coverage by news sources he deems unfavourable. This action has raised further concerns regarding press freedom and First Amendment rights in the United States.

Both CNN and MS NOW have expressed their support for their respective journalists who were denied access. CNN White House reporter Betsy Klein and MS NOW reporter Akayla Gardner reported on air that they were barred from entering the premises, which is typically staffed by network correspondents over the weekends when Trump is at the presidential retreat or at Camp David.

Trump is currently at Camp David in Maryland for the weekend. Although reporters from Politico are not usually present on Saturdays, the actions taken against CNN and MS NOW reporters have sparked significant discussion around media access to the White House and implications for journalistic integrity.

Gardner revealed that she was turned away at the entry point, and her press badge was confiscated after having passed through two security gates. An officer informed her that her identification had been disabled and requested its return, stating that the decision was beyond his authority. Additionally, Gardner noted that while an MS NOW producer was allowed entry, a photographer’s press badge had similarly been disabled.

Meanwhile, Klein reported that her own access badge was also deactivated. Brian Stelter, a CNN media analyst, characterised this action as “a direct threat to press freedom in the United States,” asserting that it went beyond CNN alone and posed broader implications for free speech in the nation.

In response to the incident, CNN reaffirmed its commitment to its journalists, stating, “We will not be deflected from our duty to hold the government and other public bodies to account.” This declaration was broadcast prior to Klein’s report regarding her barred access.

Trump’s Remarks and Broader Context

On Friday, Trump announced via his social media platform that he was “banning” CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House effective immediately due to “constant reporting: FAKE NEWS!” When questioned at an Oval Office event, he elaborated on his grievances against these outlets, asserting their reports were false and claiming their ratings suffered as a result.

He further expressed that the importance of honest news for the country necessitated such bans. In the ongoing term of his presidency, Trump and his administration have increased scrutiny over several media entities through various legal measures and regulatory pressures, which has been part of a broader trend of confrontations with the press.

The recent ban on CNN and MS NOW follows a prior decision to restrict Associated Press reporters from certain government events over a naming dispute regarding the Gulf of Mexico.
