The CSR Journal Magazine

A 27-year-old man, Pradeep, reportedly died by suicide in the toilet of the government district hospital at Ajjarkad on Friday. This tragic event is allegedly linked to an assault and threats made by the family members of a woman he had been in a relationship with for eight years. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding domestic violence and mental health support in the region.

According to a complaint lodged by Pradeep’s elder brother, Dilip Kumar, from Perdoor, the couple had been together for eight years. On the evening of October 27, at approximately 10 pm, Pradeep was walking home to Nairkodi when he was allegedly confronted by the woman’s brothers, identified as Prasanna, Sudhir, Shailesh, Sanath, Krishna, and Sujay. They reportedly arrived in three vehicles and forcibly took him to the woman’s residence.

Upon arrival at the house, Pradeep was allegedly assaulted by Prasanna, who struck him on the legs and back, resulting in severe bruising. Other individuals present reportedly joined in the attack, using wooden sticks to inflict injuries. Dilip, concerned for his brother’s safety, instructed friends to check on Pradeep after hearing about the incident.

Assault and Hospitalisation

When Dilip’s friends arrived at the woman’s house, they allegedly witnessed the accused verbally abusing and physically assaulting Pradeep. The assault reportedly ceased once the assailants noticed the visitors. The following day, Dilip learned that Pradeep had been admitted to the district hospital at Ajjarkad for medical treatment. During a visit to the hospital, Pradeep recounted the details of the assault to Dilip.

He expressed his distress over the incident and mentioned that the girl and her brothers had threatened him, which contributed to his emotional turmoil. The situation was reportedly grave, and Pradeep’s mental state appeared to deteriorate following the assault. On October 30, at around 5.30 pm, Pradeep was found to have allegedly taken his own life inside a toilet at the hospital. This tragic outcome has prompted further investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and the events leading up to it.

Legal Action and Investigation

In response to the allegations made by Dilip, the Udupi Town police have registered a case under Sections 108 and 190, along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case involves eight individuals, including the woman and two migrant workers, who are reportedly connected to the incident.

The police investigation aims to ascertain the full details of the events that led to Pradeep’s death and to determine the extent of involvement of each accused party. Authorities are also looking into the broader implications of the case, particularly in relation to mental health support and domestic violence prevention in the community.

This incident has highlighted the urgent need for effective measures to address issues of violence and mental health within relationships. As the investigation progresses, it is expected that more information will emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding Pradeep’s tragic decision.
