Trinamool Congress Asked To Vacate Kolkata Headquarters Amid Lease Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been requested to vacate its headquarters in Kolkata due to a lease dispute, further complicating the party’s challenges following its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The five-storey building, known as Trinamool Bhavan, has been in use since May 2022, when the party temporarily relocated there while its original office underwent redevelopment.

Sources indicate that the building’s owner, Sk Inamur Rehman, has notified the party leadership that the lease has expired and that they must vacate within a two-month timeframe. Rehman, who owns Modern Decorators and has secured various government contracts during the TMC’s 15-year governance, has raised concerns regarding the property’s security since the recent change in government.

Legal counsel for the property owner has alleged that the lease agreement was due to expire in 2026 and claims that TMC representatives ceased communication from October 2025 onwards, leading the owner to involve Pragati Maidan Police Station in the matter. However, the TMC has strongly contested this assertion.

Party Leadership Disputes Ownership Claims

Subir Majumdar, caretaker of Trinamool Bhavan, countered the owner’s claims by asserting that an active agreement remains valid until 2027. Majumdar alleged that the owner is attempting to misrepresent the lease status to gain favour with the current government. He emphasised, “The agreement is valid till 2027 and the building will continue to function as Trinamool Bhavan until then.”

Reports concerning the removal of furniture from the premises and modifications to the building’s colour scheme have stirred speculation about a possible relocation for the party. Nevertheless, TMC has sought to mitigate concerns regarding the situation, suggesting that it is under control.

Party MLA Kunal Ghosh clarified that the building was always intended to serve as a temporary headquarters while the original office in Topsia is being rebuilt. He stated, “Since the TMC’s main headquarters is being rebuilt, this house was temporarily functioning as Trinamool Bhavan. The original headquarters is almost ready now. Our leadership is in talks with the owner of the building. It is a bilateral matter between the two sides.”

Internal Party Struggles Intensify

The lease conflict occurs in the backdrop of a significant internal revolt within the TMC, spurred by the party’s substantial loss in the recent Assembly elections. Discontent among the ranks has led to at least 59 of 80 MLAs, under the leadership of first-time MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, breaking away to form a separate faction.

Banerjee has been designated as the Leader of Opposition after the Speaker rejected the TMC’s recommendation to appoint Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay in that role. Additionally, within Parliament, a rebellious faction led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has claimed support from approximately two-thirds of the party’s Lok Sabha MPs. This faction has announced its decision to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), a lesser-known political entity.

As these developments unfold, the future of Trinamool Bhavan and the internal structure of the TMC remain uncertain, complicating the party’s political landscape moving forward.
