Chandrashekhar Azad, the president of the Azad Samaj Party-Kanshiram and a Member of Parliament, has emphasised the need for accountability regarding the alleged actions of Delhi Police against student protesters. This statement was made amid growing criticism of the police’s conduct during a protest on July 20 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Azad noted that the Delhi Police is under the jurisdiction of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, headed by Amit Shah.

He highlighted the importance of addressing the use of force reportedly employed against the protesters, asserting that those responsible for such actions must face consequences. Azad starkly stated, “Accountability must be fixed for any matter,” drawing attention to the expectation of transparency and justice.

Comparisons with Previous Incidents

In his remarks, Azad drew parallels between the current situation and previous incidents, particularly referencing allegations concerning police actions during the firing on Kar Sevaks in Uttar Pradesh. He pointed out that if accountability was demanded in one instance, the same standard should apply to others, including the recent events involving students.

Azad questioned, “Should all these things be forgotten? It’s true that accountability must be ensured,” further underlining the necessity for an examination of the orders leading to the police actions in the recent protests. Alongside Azad, Aam Aadmi Party’s Malwinder Singh Kang also called for accountability from the Home Ministry, insisting that questions regarding police conduct must be answered.

Kang stated, “Accountability must be fixed because the police are directly under the control of the Ministry of Home Affairs. That is why we are seeking answers from them,” reiterating the cooperative stance within the opposition regarding the police’s responsibility.

Opposition’s Protests and Demands

The calls for accountability were echoed across various opposition parties, with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, criticising Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s absence in Parliament during the escalating tensions surrounding the police’s alleged actions. Gandhi contended that Shah’s absence indicated a sense of guilt regarding the brutal treatment of student protestors.

He called for the establishment of an independent, Supreme Court-monitored high-powered committee to investigate the incidents at Jantar Mantar. “Students deserve justice. An independent SC-monitored high-powered committee must be constituted to probe brutalities against our students,” Gandhi added.

On the same day, opposition MPs from several parties associated with the INDIA bloc gathered in the Parliament complex to voice their concerns. They protested against the alleged police action and raised questions about the reported misappropriation of funds intended for the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. During the demonstration at approximately 10.30 am, MPs held placards and shouted slogans demanding accountability from the central government.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain stated that the opposition has called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and seeks an official statement in Parliament regarding the police’s actions, along with an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This protest occurred ahead of the Rajya Sabha’s discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.
