IIT Delhi Ranks 66th in QS Asia 2027 Rankings as Chinese Universities Dominate

The CSR Journal Magazine

The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027 have been released, indicating that India’s top institution is the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, which ranks 66th. Following closely are the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, at 79th, and IIT Bombay at 83rd. Notably, no Indian university has secured a place in the top 10 of the Asian rankings.

This edition of the rankings includes 1,722 universities from 26 higher education systems, with 195 new entrants. India is represented by 325 universities, making it the second-most represented country in the region, while Mainland China leads with 448 institutions, having added 53 new universities to its list.

Among the top ten Indian universities, IIT Delhi continues to hold the highest rank, although its position places it outside the top 50 in Asia. The IISc and IIT Bombay follow, with four other IITs making it into the top six Indian institutions. Chandigarh University is also notable, ranking 104th in Asia.

Overview of India’s Top Universities

The following is a list of India’s top universities as per the QS Asia Rankings 2027: IIT Delhi ranks 66th, IISc Bengaluru at 79th, IIT Bombay at 83rd, IIT Madras at 85th, and IIT Kharagpur at 90th. IIT Kanpur is placed at 97th, while Chandigarh University ranks 104th, followed by the University of Delhi at 106th. IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee are positioned at 120th and 124th respectively, with the ‘=’ sign indicating shared ranks.

While India’s overall representation has increased, with 21 universities now in Asia’s top 200 compared to 20 in the previous edition, this growth does not necessarily reflect stronger positions at the top. The presence of multiple institutions does not guarantee a place among the highest ranks.

Despite the increase in the number of ranked universities, IIT Delhi’s position at 66th highlights the challenges faced by Indian institutions in breaking into the top tier of Asian universities. The competition remains intense, particularly with the dominance of Chinese universities in the rankings.

Top Universities in Asia

In the top ten, Hong Kong boasts the strongest representation with five universities, while Singapore has two. Notably, no Indian university appears in the top 20, indicating a significant gap between Indian institutions and their Asian counterparts.

China’s presence in higher education continues to expand, with three universities in the top 10: Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Fudan University. This trend underscores a shifting competitive landscape, particularly for Singaporean institutions, as the National University of Singapore (NUS) has dropped from third to sixth place, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has fallen from joint third to eighth.

India’s results present a dual narrative: a growing number of universities gaining recognition across Asia, yet a persistent struggle to enter the ranks of the region’s top institutions. The latest rankings highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Indian universities in achieving higher standings on the Asian stage.
