Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit New Delhi in November, according to official sources in Dhaka. The governments of India and Bangladesh have begun discussions to finalise plans for the planned visit. This engagement aims to solidify diplomatic ties and may result in significant developments in the bilateral relationship.

Discussions are reportedly focused on the logistical arrangements and potential timeline for the visit. Sources from Dhaka suggest that the high-level interactions have gained momentum, reflecting both nations’ interest in enhancing cooperation and addressing mutual concerns.

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi is acknowledged for his consistent communication with senior officials from Bangladesh. His efforts are reportedly instrumental in maintaining open lines of dialogue between New Delhi and Dhaka, facilitating a conducive atmosphere for the upcoming visit.

High-Level Engagement Anticipated

Reportedly, both Rahman and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi express eagerness for the meeting to occur. Such a visit could allow discussions on essential aspects of bilateral relations, including trade, security, and regional cooperation.

However, plans are still in their preliminary stages, with final dates and detailed arrangements pending through diplomatic negotiations. If realised, the visit could reinforce partnerships and contribute to the stability of the region.

Rahman’s previous scheduled visit fell through due to strained relations following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s press interaction on August 5. The Bangladeshi government indicated that this interaction adversely affected the environment necessary for Rahman’s visit, indicating a need for a more favourable context for diplomatic engagements.

Clarifications on Invitations to Upcoming Events

Recent statements from the Ministry of External Affairs in India clarified the status of invitations extended to Rahman. Previously, Bangladeshi officials had claimed that the Prime Minister was not invited to the upcoming BRICS Summit, leading to confusion about the nature of the invitations.

Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that two distinct invitations were issued: one for a bilateral visit and another for the BRICS Summit in Rahman’s capacity as chair of BIMSTEC. This clarification aimed to address and correct the earlier assertions made by Dhaka.

Jaiswal emphasised that both invitations were separate, and that Rahman had received notice for participation in both events, thereby demonstrating India’s intent to engage with Bangladesh comprehensively. Such statements highlight the complexities surrounding diplomatic communications between the two nations.

Upcoming International Engagements for Rahman

Furthermore, Rahman is set to travel to New York on September 21 to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he will remain until September 26. This engagement marks one of his international appearances since assuming the office of Prime Minister.

He became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh in February 2026, following a significant victory for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in national elections. His return to governance follows years spent in self-imposed exile in London, which adds further context to his diplomatic initiatives and engagements.

As the planned visit to India draws closer, both countries appear committed to navigating any challenges in their relationship to enhance bilateral cooperation and promote stability in the region.
