Iran Issues Detailed Video Guide on Surviving a Nuclear Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iranian authorities have recently issued a public advisory focused on surviving a nuclear explosion. The eight-minute video, disseminated through the official news agency IRNA, provides crucial instructions for citizens on how to take shelter, avoid radioactive contamination, and protect themselves from fallout. This initiative is particularly notable given the current geopolitical tensions and the alleged threats from the United States.

The guidelines recommend that individuals seek shelter in basements or interior rooms, away from windows, and advise against using air conditioning systems that draw in outside air. Citizens are also instructed to prepare for a minimum of 24 hours of sheltering after a potential attack, relying on packaged food and bottled water.

The advisory highlights the risks posed by radioactive particles, which can travel through the air and affect individuals far from the initial explosion site. This advisory coincides with Iran’s Passive Defence Week, an event marked annually for over a decade. However, it is the first time that such a detailed survival guide has been released, marking a significant shift in the government’s approach to public safety in the context of nuclear threats.

Specific Instructions for Citizens

The Iranian advisory outlines the primary dangers associated with a nuclear explosion, including intense light, blast waves, extreme heat, and the potential release of radioactive materials. Ebrahim Adelzadeh, the deputy director of education and research at the Isfahan Red Crescent Society, emphasised the importance of finding sturdy shelter and avoiding windows during an emergency.

Residents are advised to close all doors and windows, turn off air conditioning, and shut down ventilation systems that could allow outside air into buildings. Reports from Egyptian and Saudi Arabian media outlets indicate that the instructions further stress the necessity of remaining indoors for at least 24 hours following an attack, with additional advice to avoid assuming safety after this period.

In case individuals are caught outdoors during a nuclear event, they are warned against looking directly at the explosion. Instead, they should lie low to the ground, seek cover behind barriers, and protect their heads and faces until they can reach a sturdy building. The guidance explicitly advises against using vehicles as shelters and discourages outdoor activities such as watching or photographing the explosion.

Concerns Over Radioactive Fallout

A significant aspect of the advisory is the warning about airborne radioactive particles. Adelzadeh cautioned that these materials could disperse widely, potentially affecting individuals well beyond the immediate vicinity of the explosion. He urged residents to take official warnings seriously and to assess the safety of their homes based on the information provided by authorities.

In the event of exposure to radioactive dust, individuals are advised to carefully remove outer clothing, seal it in bags, and wash exposed skin and hair with lukewarm water and soap. The advisory also includes specific recommendations for personal hygiene, such as using regular shampoo without conditioner and employing wet wipes if bathing is not feasible.

Moreover, the video addresses the use of medications in radiation emergencies, cautioning against self-medication. Abbas Abedi, a spokesperson for Isfahan’s pre-hospital emergency services, noted that while stable iodine can reduce the absorption of radioactive iodine, it does not protect against other forms of radiation. The advisory underscores the importance of staying informed through battery-powered radios, as electromagnetic pulses could disrupt electronic communication systems.
