India has provided clarification regarding the recent invitations sent to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, stating that he received two distinct invitations. One invitation was for a bilateral visit, while the other was to attend the BRICS Summit in his role as the chair of BIMSTEC. This statement was made by External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Tuesday, following remarks from Dhaka suggesting that the invitation to the BRICS Summit had been extended to Bangladesh as a nation and not specifically to Rahman.

Details of the Invitations

According to Jaiswal, the invitation process was clear; the Prime Minister of Bangladesh was invited for a bilateral meeting, and additionally, he received a separate invitation to attend the BRICS Summit as the BIMSTEC chair. The spokesperson emphasised that both invitations were legitimate, responding to queries raised by ANI. Despite being the chair of BIMSTEC, Rahman did not attend the summit, leading to further discussion on the implications of his absence.

Bangladesh’s Explanation for Absence

Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Humaiun Kobir, elaborated on Rahman’s decision not to participate in the BRICS Summit. He indicated that Dhaka preferred to enhance its relationship with India through direct bilateral dialogue instead of utilising a multilateral setting. Kobir expressed a desire for a fresh beginning in diplomatic relations and stated that constructive discussions should take precedence over broader multilateral engagements.

He further clarified that any potential visit by Rahman to India would occur once both nations reached a consensus on a suitable schedule. The State Minister mentioned that there was no immediate rush to formalise the visit, insisting that it would occur when both sides are ready and there’s an agreement on the timing.

Context of Bangladesh-India Relations

These developments occur as diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India are reportedly strained, particularly after the political changes in Bangladesh following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. In the aftermath of her departure from the premiership, Dhaka has called for Hasina’s extradition, expressing concerns regarding her political activities conducted from India. The response from Bangladesh indicates a desire to recalibrate relations with India and pursue a new framework focused on mutual interests.

Officials from Bangladesh have openly conveyed their aim to reset ties with India, aiming to build a relationship that diverges from the uncomfortable dynamics that characterised the tenure of Sheikh Hasina.
