X Launches Space-Themed Home Screen Icons for Premium iPhone Users

The CSR Journal Magazine

X has unveiled an update that introduces over a dozen new alternate home screen icons for its iPhone and iPad applications. This change aims to provide users with more visual options, moving away from the standard black logo. The update represents the first significant icon refresh since the rebranding from Twitter to X. According to reports from 9to5Mac, the new designs include a variety of space-themed icons, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the application.

The latest update replaces the previous alternate icons with entirely new designs, eliminating older versions. Users will now find a selection of fresh icons that reflect the platform’s new identity. However, access to these custom icons is limited to X Premium subscribers, previously known as Twitter Blue, indicating that this feature is exclusively available for paying users.

Historically, the app had offered temporary seasonal icons, but following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company, the iconic blue bird logo was replaced with the black X symbol. The introduction of these new designs marks a significant shift in the branding strategy of the platform.

Instructions for Changing the App Icon

Changing the app icon is a straightforward process for X Premium subscribers. Users need to launch the X app on their iPhone or iPad, navigate to the Settings menu, and select the Subscription option. From there, they can access the App Icons section and choose their preferred design for the home screen. It is important to note that free users will not have access to these new icon options, as they are tied to the paid subscription plan.

The introduction of these new icons is part of X’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and engagement. By providing a range of designs, the platform aims to cater to the preferences of its subscribers, allowing for a more personalised interface. This update is expected to be well-received by users who are looking for a fresh look for their devices.

As X continues to evolve, the focus on premium features highlights the company’s strategy to incentivise subscriptions, offering unique functionalities that distinguish paid users from those on the free plan. This approach aligns with broader trends in the tech industry, where companies are increasingly monetising premium features.

Apple Implements New Guidelines for App Developers

In conjunction with X’s updates, Apple is set to make significant changes to its platform with the introduction of the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone. Developers have been informed that starting from April 2027, all new apps and updates submitted to the App Store must include screenshots specifically tailored for the iPhone Duo. This requirement aims to ensure that applications are optimised for the device’s unique features.

The iPhone Duo boasts an inner display that is 50 per cent larger than that of the iPhone 18 Pro Max and supports multiple folded positions. This design allows applications to transition smoothly between the inner and outer displays, maintaining proportional scaling due to the consistent aspect ratio across both screens.

To ensure compatibility with the iPhone Duo, developers must follow specific guidelines. They are required to recompile existing applications using Xcode 27.1 and can test their software with Device Hub, a tool that simulates how an app behaves in various orientations and states. Apple has also provided new design rules and templates for App Store product pages, encouraging developers to participate in in-person workshops for further guidance.

Submissions for the foldable device commenced on October 7, and once an updated app is approved with the necessary screenshots, its App Store page will display a badge indicating that it is optimised for the iPhone Duo. This initiative reflects Apple’s commitment to enhancing the user experience on its new device while ensuring that developers are well-equipped to adapt their applications accordingly.
