Aishwarya Rai’s Iconic Bridal Looks Explored by Neeta Lulla

The CSR Journal Magazine

The collaboration between fashion designer Neeta Lulla and actress Aishwarya Rai has produced some of the most memorable bridal moments in Indian cinema. In a recent Instagram video shared on November 2, Lulla discussed the details behind three significant bridal looks that Rai has donned, both in films and during her personal wedding. The designer posed a thought-provoking question about the versatility of bridal aesthetics, asking, “How many different bridal avatars can one woman embody?”

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam: A Study in Simplicity

In the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, released in 1999, Neeta Lulla crafted a wedding look for Aishwarya that moved away from the vibrant colours associated with the character Nandini. Instead, the focus shifted to a more traditional elegance for the wedding scene. Aishwarya wore a simple red-and-white silk gharchola that was devoid of excessive embellishments. This minimalist approach emphasised the emotional significance of the textiles, complemented by classic gold jewellery. Lulla remarked on the power of simplicity, stating, “Sometimes it’s the beauty of simplicity that makes the look unforgettable.” The understated design effectively highlighted the character’s transition into matrimony.

Devdas: The Grandeur of Bridal Fashion

For the film Devdas, released in 2002, Neeta Lulla faced the challenge of creating a wedding ensemble that embodied regality and timelessness. Aishwarya’s character, Paro, required a look that was both enigmatic and larger-than-life. The resulting outfit was not merely a costume but a masterclass in garment construction, featuring an impressive 14 yards of intricate embroidery. The saree was crafted from fine Banarasi mesh, adorned with rich resham work, delicate zardozi, and meticulous beadwork. Due to the considerable weight of the saree and jewellery, Lulla designed it to be pre-stitched and pre-draped, ensuring that it appeared effortlessly weightless while allowing for ease of movement.

To maintain visual integrity, a heavy brocade petticoat was hidden beneath the mesh drape, fully embroidered and finished with delicate frills. This thoughtful design ensured that every layer remained impeccable, even if the saree shifted during movement. Lulla’s attention to detail in this ensemble exemplified her commitment to creating a stunning bridal look that resonated with the film’s aesthetic.

Aishwarya’s Real-Life Wedding Attire

Aishwarya Rai’s real-life wedding to actor Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007, marked another significant moment in bridal fashion. For this occasion, Lulla focused on the bride’s personal style rather than cinematic flair. Aishwarya wore a golden Kanjeevaram silk saree, featuring a structured blouse with a five-inch sleeve that was heavily embellished with zardozi and kundan hand-embroidery. The saree’s border was intentionally kept to a quarter-inch width, allowing the luxurious texture of the woven silk to take centre stage.

The ensemble was completed with traditional uncut diamond (polki) jewellery, creating a harmonious portrait that reflected Aishwarya’s vision for her wedding day. While speculation regarding the cost of the bridal saree continues to circulate, Neeta Lulla encapsulated the essence of bridal couture by stating, “What price tag can one truly put on bridal couture of such artistic magnanimity?” This statement underscores the emotional and artistic value inherent in bridal fashion.
