The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned C Vijayabaskar, a leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and his wife V Ramya in connection with an alleged money laundering case involving disproportionate assets valued at Rs 35.79 crore. Vijayabaskar is required to appear at the ED’s Chennai zonal office on November 6, while his wife has been called for questioning in the following week, as reported by officials from the agency.

This marks the second instance of summons issued to the couple regarding the case, which alleges that Vijayabaskar accrued assets that are disproportionate to his declared income during his tenure as Tamil Nadu’s Health and Family Welfare Minister from 2016 to 2021 under the previous AIADMK government.

Background of the Case

The investigation stems from a case of disproportionate assets that was initially registered by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in 2021. The DVAC filed a charge sheet in May 2023, alleging that Vijayabaskar had accumulated assets worth Rs 35.79 crore beyond his known sources of income, according to local media reports.

In response to the DVAC’s findings, the ED launched a parallel investigation into money laundering under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). As part of this ongoing investigation, ED officials conducted searches at Vijayabaskar’s residence in Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu, in March 2024. Following these searches, the agency summoned both Vijayabaskar and his wife, recording their statements at that time.

The latest summons indicate the agency’s commitment to furthering its inquiry into the alleged accumulation of assets and the financial transactions associated with them. The ED’s actions suggest a thorough examination of the financial dealings linked to Vijayabaskar’s time in office.

Vijayabaskar’s Political Background

C Vijayabaskar has been a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu politics, having served as the Health Minister from 2016 to 2021 during the AIADMK administration. His role in the government has placed him under scrutiny, especially concerning the allegations of financial misconduct. In July 2023, he joined the TVK, a party led by actor Joseph Vijay, after the party gained political traction.

In addition to his recent political affiliations, Vijayabaskar has held significant positions within the AIADMK and has been involved in various initiatives during his tenure as Health Minister. His current role as Pudukkottai district organisational secretary for the TVK places him in a key position within the party structure.
