Tanvi Patri One Win Away From Historic Youth Olympics Badminton Medal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tanvi Patri, a 15-year-old badminton player from India, is now just one victory away from securing a historic medal at the Youth Olympics. She reached the semi-finals of the girls’ singles event after defeating Thailand’s Kungkaew Kakanik in straight games on Wednesday, November 4, in Dakar. The match concluded with scores of 21-17 and 21-13, taking a total of 39 minutes.

As the third seed in the tournament, Tanvi displayed remarkable skill and resilience throughout the competition, having progressed to this stage without losing a single game. Her next challenge will be against Japan’s second seed, Yuzuno Watanabe, later on the same day.

Tanvi and Watanabe have previously faced each other at the 2024 Pathum Thani Junior International Series in Thailand, where Tanvi lost in straight sets. However, the upcoming match presents an opportunity for Tanvi to secure at least a silver medal, which would make her the first Indian girl to win a badminton medal at the Youth Olympics.

Historical Context of Indian Badminton at Youth Olympics

Only three Indian players have reached the badminton semi-finals in the history of the Youth Olympics. HS Prannoy secured a silver medal at the inaugural event in Singapore in 2010, while Lakshya Sen finished as the runner-up in Buenos Aires in 2018. In 2014, Aditya Joshi reached the boys’ singles semi-finals but returned home without a medal.

Tanvi’s performance in Dakar adds to her already impressive season. She previously reached the pre-quarter-finals of the World Junior Championships held in Cairo last month and won the Pontianak International Challenge in Indonesia in August. Just days before that victory, she was the runner-up at the Singapore International Challenge, showcasing her consistent performance on the international circuit.

However, the scheduling of matches may pose a challenge for Tanvi. Both her quarter-final and semi-final matches are set for the same day, which leaves her with limited recovery time before facing Watanabe. This situation has raised concerns regarding the scheduling of badminton events at major multi-sport competitions.

Background of Tanvi Patri

Tanvi Patri was born in Balasore, Odisha, and began her badminton journey while her family was residing in China, where her father, Rabinarayan, worked in the software industry. During their time in China, she trained under Chinese coaches, which laid a strong foundation for her skills. The family returned to India during the Covid-19 pandemic, after which Tanvi joined the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy in Bengaluru in 2022.

Tanvi made her mark on the international stage by winning the Asian Under-15 title in Chengdu in 2024. She further solidified her reputation by clinching the Asian Under-17 crown at the same venue in September this year, making her the first Indian to achieve both continental junior titles.

In contrast, India’s hopes in the boys’ singles category came to an end when second seed Dev Ruparelia was defeated by China’s Hong Tian Yue in the quarter-finals. The match concluded with scores of 22-24 and 10-21, lasting 37 minutes. This loss eliminated India from contention in the boys’ singles event at the Youth Olympics.
