Tamil Nadu Governor Asks Vijay To Prove Majority Amid Government Formation Talks

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, requested Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay to demonstrate his party’s majority during their recent meeting in Chennai on May 7. This was the second consecutive day of discussions amidst ongoing political instability in the region. Sources indicated that Arlekar sought clarification regarding the necessary numbers for government formation, commonly referred to as the “magic number.”

During the meeting, Vijay was asked to present a list of MLAs supporting TVK’s claim to form the government in Tamil Nadu. This request follows an increasing demand for clarity on the political situation in the state. Notably, TVK has claimed to have the backing of several Congress MLAs, but they reportedly do not yet meet the majority requirement in the 234-member Assembly.

Following his discussions with the Governor, Vijay returned to his residence in Nilankarai, where he consulted senior party leaders and legal advisors. Reports suggest that Vijay is not inclined to seek support from the BJP, a move that could affect the party’s coalition dynamics. Senior officials within TVK reportedly advised exploring legal avenues concerning the government formation process.

Legal Avenues and Suggestions for the Future

Sources close to the party indicated that TVK’s leadership is considering various options, including a possible re-election as a strategy for overcoming the current impasse. This approach may reflect the party’s current political positioning within the state and its ability to secure the needed legislative support. The discussions also involved potential appeals to either the Supreme Court or the High Court to provide guidance on the formation of the government.

Simultaneously, Vijay continues to be under pressure from multiple political factions within Tamil Nadu. Thol Thirumavalavan publicly urged the Governor to invite Vijay to form the government and consequently allow him to prove his majority on the Assembly floor. Thirumavalavan’s statement highlighted concerns over alleged interference from the BJP in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, suggesting it has further complicated the situation.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has also called on the Governor to respect constitutional traditions. They have denounced the expectation placed on Vijay to prove a majority prior to being sworn into office, emphasising that such procedures may not align with proper democratic norms. CPI(M) leader P Shanmugam confirmed that his party received a correspondence from Vijay regarding support, which will be addressed in future meetings.

Impact of TVK’s Emergence on State Politics

TVK’s rise in Tamil Nadu has significantly altered the political landscape, marked by its departure from the entrenched two-party system dominated by DMK and AIADMK over the past thirty years. Their unexpected success has necessitated a recalibration of alliances among the existing parties, as they seek to navigate the new political reality.

Vijay is anticipated to vacate one of the two seats he secured during the recent Assembly elections, which may reduce the effective strength of TVK to 107 seats. When coupled with the Congress party, the coalition stands at 112 members, remaining just five short of the critical majority. This new composition introduces significant challenges and opportunities for forming a stable government.

The unfolding situation in Tamil Nadu is emblematic of the shifting dynamics within regional politics, prompting various parties to strategise in response to TVK’s newfound influence. With conversations ongoing and new developments emerging, the coming days will likely be pivotal in determining the state’s political direction.
