The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay, honoured social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy by offering floral tributes on his 147th birth anniversary in Chennai on September 17. This observance not only paid respect to Periyar’s legacy but also reinforced the state’s commitment to equality and social reform principles.

Social Justice Day Pledge Administered

During the event, CM Vijay administered the Social Justice Day pledge to both officials and citizens. This pledge underscores the continuous effort to uphold Periyar’s ideals of equality. While outlining his commitment, Vijay stated, “I will follow as my way of life the loving principle of ‘All beings are equal by birth’, and the virtuous principle of ‘All places are one, all people are my kin’.”

The Chief Minister further expanded on his commitment by emphasising the importance of rationalism, brotherhood, and socialism. He declared, “I will dedicate myself to the principles of Equality, Brotherhood, and Socialism! I will always cherish love for humanity and humanism,” concluding with a pledge to cultivate a society founded on social justice.

Historical Significance of the Self-Respect Movement

Thanthai Periyar E.V. Ramasamy was a prominent figure in social reform, known for launching the Self-Respect Movement in 1925. This movement aimed to challenge the Brahminical dominance and uplift the status of non-Brahmin communities in Tamil Nadu. His efforts encompassed advocating for rationalism, gender equality, and anti-caste reforms, thereby contributing significantly to the socio-political landscape of the region.

The year 1925 marked a crucial point in the Self-Respect Movement for multiple reasons. It was during this year that Periyar launched the Tamil weekly Kudi Arasu (The Republic) in May, promoting a strong message for social reform. Additionally, his departure from the Indian National Congress (INC) in November is often viewed as a formal start to the movement, although the publication had already begun introducing new dynamics into the sociopolitical environment of the Madras Presidency.

Periyar’s Kudi Arasu was influential in presenting a new vision for Tamil society, approaching social reform beyond mere political aspirations. After parting from the INC, he utilised the journal as a platform to critique both the Congress and Brahminism, a term he employed to describe the oppressive nature of caste-based orthodoxy in Hindu society.
