Rahul Gandhi Engages In Discussions With CM Vijay In Chennai

The CSR Journal Magazine

On Saturday, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay for discussions at Vijay’s Neelankarai residence in Chennai. This meeting occurred against the backdrop of protests in New Delhi, where the Opposition has accused the Election Commission of electoral misconduct, notably concerning the “vote chori” controversy.

Gandhi has frequently condemned the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and has highlighted various alleged discrepancies in the electoral process. The meeting is particularly noteworthy as it marks Gandhi’s and Vijay’s first dialogue since the formal establishment of the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance (SSV) led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The alliance includes parties like Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), creating a consolidated front amidst ongoing political tensions. The timing of the meeting is crucial, as it follows recent victories for the ruling alliance in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections. Tensions around electoral conduct are expected to intensify as the Congress party positions itself on these issues, seeking a robust discourse ahead of the upcoming elections.

Lunch Meeting and Informal Coffee Outing

Gandhi arrived in Chennai earlier that day and joined Vijay for a lunch meeting that lasted approximately one hour. During their discussion, several pressing political topics were reportedly covered, according to party insiders. Following this meeting, the two leaders visited a nearby café in Palavakkam for an informal gathering, where they are said to have enjoyed coffee and pastries, including cappuccino, tiramisu, and cookies.

This café, situated in a serene area near the beach and close to the East Coast Road, is owned by Nirav Shah, Bhavesh Shah, and Taruna Hinduja. Gandhi’s earlier attendance at Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony in May 2026 adds context to this meeting, underscoring the evolving political relationship between the two leaders.

This gathering serves as a strategic discussion for both leaders as they navigate their respective political landscapes, particularly with the Congress aiming to foreground electoral concerns as it gears up for further campaigning.

Upcoming Outreach Programme for Students

Looming over this sequence of events, Gandhi is set to engage with students later the same day at Chennai’s Island Grounds, a part of the Congress party’s youth outreach initiative, ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’, also known as ‘Maanavargalin Kural’. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee head, Manickam Tagore, indicated expectations that between 10,000 and 20,000 students.

These students, who registered and received QR codes—would participate in this engagement. During this interaction, Gandhi is likely to address various issues pertinent to Tamil Nadu’s students, including the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, job scarcity, educational opportunities for women and girls, and the educational policies of the Union government.

This event has been framed more as an engagement session than a standard political rally, allowing students the opportunity to raise concerns about jobs and education directly. With a significant promotional campaign featuring banners, flyers, and digital posters throughout Chennai, the Congress aims to resonate with youth concerns, illustrating their intention to engage meaningfully with this demographic.

Heightened Security Ahead of Events In Chennai

In preparation for Gandhi’s event, as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Chennai on October 11, security measures have been intensified across the city. Officials indicated that the government has deployed approximately 15,000 police personnel as part of a five-tier security arrangement, overseen by Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj.

Additional checks have been instituted along crucial transit routes and the event venue. Access to the student engagement will be restricted to registered participants holding QR codes, with separate entry points established for male and female attendees. The general public will be barred from entering the venue to ensure safety and order.

After the student interaction, Gandhi is expected to leave for Chennai Airport at approximately 8.30 pm, preparing for his flight to New Delhi at 9.40 pm, concluding his day of political engagement in Tamil Nadu.
